Saleh Out, Bill In: Could Jets Hire Belichick?

    By Anthony Licciardi,

The New York Jets thrust themselves into the middle of the football world’s focus on Tuesday when they fired head coach Robert Saleh .

New York sits at 2-3 after falling short against the mediocre Denver Broncos and, on Sunday, the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. The Jets will prepare for Monday Night Football in Week 6 with interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich leading the charge.

But eventually, New York will have to make a choice for the long-term solution at head coach.

Could former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick be the answer?

While the Jets’ timeline matches up with Belichick’s – who likely wouldn’t want to sit through a rebuild – the greatest coach of all time isn’t about to wash away the sins of two decades of bad football.

For one, Belichick is getting cushy media jobs left and right. He’ll have the opportunity to pick his favorite job of multiple opportunities during the next hiring cycle, assuming teams are on board, and doesn’t have much reason to join a turbulent (read: dysfunctional) organization.

One such off-the-field endeavor, his partnership with Underdog Fantasy, probably tells Jets fans all they need to know.

“Fun anecdote … doing wardrobe for Coach when we’re filming the commercial and we offered him a green shirt,” Underdog employee Nick Rudman tweeted . “Needless to say, I don’t think he will *ever* coach the Jets.”

It very well could be as simple as Belichick not wanting to return to New York, where he was an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for three seasons before his infamous exit from the franchise, where he was hired only to resign a day later.

For some, that spurning was enough to never welcome him back. For others, the decades of dominance in New England will forever render him a rival of the organization.

Of course, it remains possible that Belichick has a change of heart. The opportunity to coach quarterback Aaron Rodgers, at least on talent, is one many would sign up for. There’s more than enough talent to compete in January. But as things stand, Jets fans shouldn’t count on Belichick redeeming himself in New York.
