Greg McElroy Names Five College Football Head Coaches Who Are 'Feeling The Heat'

ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy recently dropped his "Always College Football" podcast , where he shared his thoughts on a handful of head coaches who are "feeling the heat."

McElroy believes a few powerhouse college football programs have been inconsistent at the start of the season, and he points much of those struggles to the coaching staff.

The ESPN analyst thinks USC Trojans' Lincoln Riley, Florida Gators' Billy Napier, Auburn Tigers' Hugh Freeze, TCU Horned Frogs Sonny Dykes and Arkansas Razorbacks' Sam Pittman are all "feeling the heat" as the season turns to Week 7.

Each of these coaches has a 5-7 record in their last 12 games dating back to last season.

Riley's Trojans have arguably the best roster listed. They're currently 3-2 on the season, with losses to the Michigan Wolverines and Minnesota Golden Gophers.

USC is playing in its first season in the Big Ten. It still has a few tall tasks ahead of them, set to face No. 4 Penn State in Week 7 and No. 11 Notre Dame later on this season.

Riley, coaching in his third season at USC, will be tested against higher-ranked teams, and he hasn't fared well with that task in his career.

A team like Arkansas is in a similar boat to the Trojans. Pittman has been with the Razorbacks since 2020. He's picked up some solid wins, like taking down No. 4 Tennessee in Week 6, but his best season ended with a 9-4 record in 2021.

Much like Riley, he hasn't been able to get over the hump of competing for a national title. However, the Trojans coach has been in a much better position to do so.

The bottom three coaches listed are Dykes, Napier and Freeze. While Freeze will likely keep his position as the head coach since he's been able to recruit at a high level, Napier and Dykes' firing seems to be just a matter of time.
