The Heisman Trophy may not be awarded in the first couple of weeks of October, but it's never too early to look at where things stand with the Heisman odds. Colorado Buffaloes' do-everything star Travis Hunter has been considered one of the favorites this season.

He is having an incredible season with 46 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns on offense while also making 16 tackles and two interceptions on defense. Another strong contender is Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe, who took over the top spot last week after a huge win over the Georgia Bulldogs.

After a weekend filled with upsets, including the No. 1 Crimson Tide, led by Milroe, losing to Vanderbilt, here is a new leader in the Heisman race. Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty has taken the lead with a +240 chance of winning, slightly ahead of Hunter, who is at +320, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Although playing for what some might consider a smaller school, Jeanty has been making a big impact. In just five games, he has already accumulated 1,031 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, averaging an impressive 10.9 yards per carry. If he continues at this pace, he's on track to reach 2,474 yards and 38 touchdowns by the end of the regular season.

For comparison, Barry Sanders' 1988 Heisman-winning season for the Oklahoma State Cowboys is widely considered the best for a running back in college football history. He finished with 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Jeanty could achieve that if he maintains his current performance and Boise State competes in the conference championship and/or qualifies for a bowl game. One critique against Jeanty is the level of competition he has faced. However, in a game against the currently No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks, Jeanty had 25 carries for 192 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 7.7 yards per carry.

So, for now, he's arguably playing like the best player in college football, which is why he sits atop the Heisman odds.
