Kyle Kuzma recently shed light on his feelings regarding a big trade offer he declined last season.

The Dallas Mavericks, in need of a boost for their lineup, eyed Kuzma as a potential addition to their roster to complement their stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. At the time, the Mavericks were on the playoff bubble, holding a 26-23 record, and were eager to strengthen their forward lineup in hopes of making a deeper playoff push.

Despite the team’s interest and the allure of joining a playoff contender, Kuzma chose to stay with the Washington Wizards. Reflecting on the trade he turned down, Kuzma made it clear in a recent interview with The Athletic that he feels no regret about his choice.

Asked about whether he had second thoughts, Kuzma’s response was simple: “Absolutely not.”

Kuzma went on to explain that he is confident the Mavericks ended up benefiting from the path they took instead. Kuzma suggested that if he had joined Dallas, the team likely wouldn’t have added Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington, who helped the Mavericks rank fifth in defensive rating and third in rebounds per game during the playoffs in their journey to the NBA Finals.

Kuzma expressed admiration for the Mavericks’ development, noting that they managed to create a strong roster with players who complemented each other’s skill sets well.

According to Kuzma, the Mavericks’ moves exemplify the value of a deep roster with multiple high-caliber players who can contribute in various ways, which is often essential for teams with championship aspirations.

While Kuzma respected the Mavericks’ achievements, he highlighted his personal reasons for staying with the Wizards. Despite Washington’s difficult season, ending with a 15-67 record, Kuzma felt that remaining with the team aligned better with his long-term goals.

He acknowledged that the Wizards have faced significant challenges but emphasized his commitment to the team’s rebuilding process. Kuzma put up strong numbers last season, averaging 22.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

Even with a low projected win total for the upcoming season, Kuzma remains focused on making a difference in Washington, hoping to lead the team through its rebuilding phase.
