Ja Morant Teases 'Scary' Connection With 7-Foot-4 Star

Most NBA teams with legitimate hopes of competing for a championship would blanche at the prospect of starting a rookie.

But Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey certainly isn't most rookies, and not just because the 7-foot-4 behemoth will begin his career as the league's biggest player.

Following a historic four-year stay at Purdue, the Grizzlies clearly believe Edey has what it takes to provide an immediate impact down low in 2024-25.

Other than his unprecedented blend of size, experience and collegiate production, what's poised to make Edey's acclimation to the NBA especially seamless? The connection he is developing with Grizzlies superstar point guard Ja Morant.

"We just have to make sure he’s way more comfortable and confident, and make sure he’s getting the ball where he wants to be aggressive,” Morant said of Edey after Memphis' preseason opener, per Michael Wallace of Grind City Media. “When we get it (together), it’s going to be scary, for sure.”

Edey scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds across 18 minutes of action during the Grizzies' 121-116 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.

His rock solid two-way debut was highlighted by a soaring, thunderous alley-oop dunk from Morant—early evidence of the unique pair's budding on-court partnership.

Their stars fully healthy following a 2023-24 campaign absolutely decimated by injuries, the Grizzlies have hopes of re-asserting themselves as a true Western Conference power.

The more Morant finds Edey for easy buckets around the rim, the easier that arduous task will be for Memphis in 2024-25 and beyond.
