Deion Sanders Can't Believe $600K Quarterback Decided Not to Transfer

Whether it be players being contacted illegally throughout the season or being offered large paychecks to leave a program, the combination of NIL and the transfer portal has certainly added a new element to college football.

While most won't go public about what they were offered, Colorado State Rams head coach Jay Norvell revealed at MWC media days that his quarterback, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, was offered $600,000 to transfer to Kansas State. Norvell also confirmed that star receiver Tory Horton had received significant offers to leave the program.

However, the offer for Fowler-Nicolosi left many fans in awe, especially considering the Rams went 5-7 in 2023.

Based on his comments from Tuesday, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is still a bit perplexed by Norvell's claim. While addressing changes he'd like to see from the NCAA regarding players redshirting midseason, Sanders also questioned why Fowler-Nicolosi and Horton stuck around.

“It should be something," Sanders said . "It needs to be a rule NCAA-wise to, if that’s your course of action (redshirting midseason), they should let them go and start their next journey with whatever team that is that they’ve already been talking to, because they’ve already been talking."

“Just like the two guys that we played several weeks ago at Colorado State," Sanders added. "They said they were offered how much in the portal? How you were offered 600 (thousand) and you didn’t get in the portal? Why can’t none of y’all ask that question? How are you offered $600,000 but you didn’t get in the portal?”

Sanders clearly knew that this comment would resonate throughout college football as he smiled and told the media, "I got time today, let’s move on.”

Aside from getting in a jab at the program's rival, Sanders did pose an interesting query. The head coach brought up UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka, who decided to step away from his program after NIL disagreements. Sanders questioned why any program would want a player who is choosing to leave, to still be around after they make that choice.

“It’s a lot of unfairness, like the gentleman who chose the redshirt, the (UNLV) quarterback,” Sanders said. “So is it right that he’s still practicing with the team? What course of action is that? So you just let him walk away.”

College football is far from perfect and sensible, but clearly, those involved would like some changes.
