Blockbuster Lions Trade Pitch Pairs Aidan Hutchinson with NFL All-Pro Pass Rusher

The Detroit Lions have been everything fans were hoping for and more to start the 2024 NFL season.

Through five weeks, the Lions, under fourth-year head coach Dan Campbell, have gone 3-1 and hold second place in the NFC North behind the surprisingly 5-0 Minnesota Vikings.

Detroit has been one of the better run-stoppers early in the season, allowing just 90.8 yards per game on the ground. But it is the passing defense that may be cause for concern. The Lions rank just 27th in passing yards allowed, allowing 258.3 yards per game. They also have only tallied 11 total sacks on the season, with 6.5 of them belonging to Pro Bowler Aidan Hutchinson.

But former Minnesota Vikings general manager Jeff Diamond has a trade proposal that could boost Detroit's passing defense.

In an article from the 33rd Team , Diamond projects that the Lions will land former All-Pro and New York Jets pass rusher Haason Reddick. He also believes it will only cost Detroit a late-round pick to acquire the former Philadelphia Eagles star.

"A better pass rush will help the young corners, like first-rounder Terrion Arnold," Diamond wrote. "They are missing a third-round pick in next year’s draft, but it may only take [Detroit] a fourth or fifth-rounder to get Reddick from the Jets, who probably want to rid themselves of his contract drama."

If the Lions were to acquire Reddick, they would likely need to extend him in order for him to take the field. Reddick is on the final year of a three-year, $45M contract and has not played a single snap for New York since he was acquired over the offseason as he holds out in hopes of an extension.

With defensive end Marcus Davenport, who signed with the Lions over the offseason, likely out for the year, Reddick would be a welcome sight for the Detroit faithful.

In seven NFL seasons, which includes time with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and the Eagles, Reddick has recorded 409 combined tackles and assists. He also had 58 sacks, with his best season coming in 2022, where he secured 16 sacks, five forced fumbles and three recoveries.

Reddick would be an instant upgrade to the Lions' defense over the likes of defensive ends Josh Paschal and Levi Onwuzurike, who have a combined 1.5 sacks on the season, all of which belong to Onwuzurike.
