Every year, Oklahoma and Texas face off in the Red River Rivalry. The matchup has a deeply-rooted history dating back to 1900 and the contest has been played nearly 120 times.

For both programs, this is their Super Bowl. The Cotton Bowl will be split in the middle with burnt orange and crimson. The two fan bases and programs have a hatred held for one another that they don't feel for anyone else.

The Longhorns enter the matchup ranked No. 1 in the nation after a 5-0 start to the season, whereas the Sooners are ranked No. 18 and are 4-1 with a loss to SEC foe Tennessee.

This rivalry was already one of the best in the nation. As two blue blood programs, the former Big 12 matchup was one of the best contests played during each college football season.

Add an SEC logo on the jerseys, helmets and field and now this matchup has more validity to it. The game has much more regular season implications.

For Texas, they got massive injury news regarding star quarterback Quinn Ewers. The veteran quarterback is slated to make his return for Red River Rivalry.

Arch Manning certainly sufficed as the starting quarterback. However, Ewers has played in this contest before. He's a true veteran who led his program to the College Football Playoffs a season ago. His calming presence in the tough environment will be of huge benefit to Texas.

On the other side, Oklahoma is starting the first true freshman quarterback to start this contest in the history of the rivalry as Michael Hawkins Jr. took over under center for Jackson Arnold earlier this season.

Texas certainly enters this game as a favorite, but the beauty of the rivalry is that point spread, rankings and any outside factor don't travel to the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and the two programs battle on an even playing field.
