Todd Downing Is Perfect Replacement As Jets' Play-Caller

Todd Downing has had more success as an offensive play-caller throughout his career than his predecessor in Nathaniel Hackett for the New York Jets.

Hackett's lone strong season came in 2017 when the Jacksonville Jaguars and Blake Bortles reached the AFC Championship game. For Downing, the numbers speak for themselves.

In just two short years, Downing has also cultivated a strong relationship with Jets' quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Perhaps that is why the four-time NFL MVP wasn't totally against making a change to Downing calling the team's plays going forward.

"It's a great relationship. I love Todd," Rodgers said. "Todd's a great dude, he's been fun in the room, been a phenomenal quarterback coach, told him that many times, his deliberate drills. He brings the right mindset to the room. He helps out the young guys really well too, gives a voice to me and Tyrod (Taylor) in the room, and it's been a really good working relationship."

Downing won't be changing much for the Jets going into Monday's AFC East clash against the Buffalo Bills, but his different mindset could be exactly what New York needs.

In reality, Downing's career numbers as Tennessee's former play-caller may not be among the elite in the league, but it beats the numbers Hackett has put up.

And that alone is why the decision to make a change at play-caller makes sense.
