Al Michaels Facing Backlash For 'Thursday Night Football' Comments

Longtime NFL announcer Al Michaels was in the "Thursday Night Football" booth alongside Kirk Herbstreit in Week 6, covering the San Francisco 49ers versus Seattle Seahawks matchup.

The 49ers ended the game with a 36-24 victory, advancing to 3-3 on the season. While it was a much-needed win for the 49ers in prime time, much of the attention after the game didn't surround the NFC West dual.

Michaels made a comment about San Francisco's injury woes, and fans weren't too pleased with his remark. 49ers kicker Mathew Wright suffered a shoulder injury while attempting to tackle an opposing player.

While Wright was walking off the field and potentially getting checked for his injury in the locker room, Michaels laughed off the injury.

"Oh boy [laughing], there goes Matthew Wright," Michaels said. "Thinking, what was I doing getting involved in the tackle."

Many fans didn't find Wright's injury to be a laughing matter, seemingly calling out Michaels for his joking manner.

"No way Al Michaels just downplayed the kickers injury like that," said one fan.

"Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit openly amused by the injury to the 49ers kicker. What is that about?" said another fan.

"Al Michaels think it’s hilarious that niners kicker’s keep getting hunger gamed," commented one fan.

"Al Michaels trying his hardest to jinx our kicker," said one fan.

"Find someone who loves you as much as Al Michaels loves injuries to kickers. Dude is absolutely giddy," said another fan.

Wright was recently signed to a one-year deal with the 49ers, just days before their matchup against the Seahawks. He had previously played in 24 career games, competing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers.

Before the game, he connected with 85.1% field goals and 94.6% of extra points during his career.

He finished the game against Seattle with three extra points and three field goals.

Wright was thrust into the lineup in Week 6 after starting kicker Jake Moody suffered a high ankle sprain against the Arizona Cardinals.

Moody was also attempting to make a tackle. He was involved in a physical play on a kickoff return by Seahawks returner DeeJay Dallas. While he attempted to stop Dallas from reaching the end zone, he was unsuccessful and got knocked on his back.

The heavy hit caused the ankle sprain that may have Moody out for an extended period of time.
