Jerry Jones 'Aggressive' Trade Answer; Romeo Rumor?

    By Mike Fisher,

FRISCO - In the offseason, Jerry Jones' "all-in'' comment was allowed to dangle in a way that was wildly misunderstood by Dallas Cowboys watchers.

Now the Cowboys owner is talking positively about "being aggressive'' - and I am going to jump in immediately to clear up any more wild misunderstandings.

Jones was asked that given Dallas' solid record of 3-2 and given the added roster holes due to a rash of injuries if the Cowboys would be "aggressive'' in pursuing roster help, obviously in the form of trades.

And Jerry twisted the issue into a pretzel in the way only he can.

“I agree with being aggressive,'' Jones answered tantalizingly. "But the guys we got out there can be aggressive.''

    Oh.

He continued, "We’ve got guys on the practice squad that can step up there and make those plays in volume. 'Aggressive' in the sense of being 'aggressive in letting the guys you have in this depth go play.”

So yeah, you're thinking Derrick Henry but he means K.J. Henry.

You're thinking T.J. Watt but he means T.J. Bass.

You're thinking Davante but he means KaVontae.

Some of the fellas on 105.3 The Fan, joining the chorus in trying to nudge Jones and the front office off their established position (they are "all in'' on trying to win with the pieces in place but planning to "Blow It Up'' and invest assets in 2025), are bringing up names like Green Bay Packers unhappy receiver Romeo Doubs.

Doubs last week went AWOL from the team for two days and then was suspended from Sunday’s game with the Los Angeles Rams for "conduct detrimental to the team.''

Doubs hadn’t practiced Thursday or Friday. The Packers (2-2) said at the time he was dealing with a personal matter.

“His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said Saturday in a statement. “While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week.”

Sounds like a peach of a guy. But he does cost just $1 million or so per year and he is signed through 2025. He had a monster game vs. Dallas in the playoffs last year when he caught six balls for 161 yards and a TD.

But this year? Doubs has just 12 catches for 169 yards and no touchdowns through Green Bay’s first four games. ... not on track to replicate what he did in the regular season when he had 59 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns last year.

So ... the Packers are giving up on him? Inasmuch as he's so cheap that if he turns out to be a knucklehead, the salary is no issue. Is he a better player than Dallas might draft in a middle round next year? Sure. But I ask again: Who says Green Bay is dumping him?

And Jerry says even if teams are dumping guys, that not his version of "aggressive.''

Things can change between now and the Nov. 5 trade deadline. But the Cowboys are making it very clear what their intentions are here. You and I don't have to like it. But given the clarity, you and I damn sure have no excuse for once again wildly misunderstanding it.
