$66 Million College Football Coach Turns Heads for Being 'Tense' Amid Pressure

All eyes are on Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day as the team takes on the No. 3 Oregon Ducks on Saturday. Day is a remarkable 61-8 as Ohio State head coach, yet there is still pressure mounting given his 1-3 record against the Michigan Wolverines.

Day initially signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract with the Buckeyes, per The Columbus Dispatch . The coach then signed a two-year extension in 2022 worth $9.5 million annually that has his deal slated to run through 2028.

This makes Day's current contract worth more than $66 million, despite just one win against his rival. Yahoo Sports' Dan Wetzel remains puzzled as to why Day looks so "tense" ahead of the team's Week 7 matchup against Oregon.

"I watch interviews with Ryan Day and Ryan Day's always been a very serious guy, I think," Wetzel remarked during an Oct. 8 episode of the "College Football Enquirer." "Like, this is not, you know, [a] gregarious, public interview guy, so he's been a serious coach. But he looks tense.

"Like this guy has done everything but win it [championship], and he's had seasons go under and [by] like a single play, a field goal sailing this way, like the smallest of margins that you could have. That would put a guy who's unbelievably successful, an incredible recruiter and a tremendous coach to somehow [have] not completely won over his fan base. I see this guy who's just tense, everything's just like, ‘We got to do more.’"

Day could look even more tense if the undefeated Buckeyes fall to the Ducks. Yet, Day's estimated $36.5 million buyout, per 247Sports , should have the coach feeling confident in his job security.
