Concern Grows for Major College Football Coach After Rivalry Loss

Oklahoma scored first against Texas in Red River Rivalry, but that's about the only thing that went right for the Sooners on Saturday.

Oklahoma was completely stifled by Texas, managing just a field goal in a 34-3 rout that felt even more one-sided than the score suggests. The Longhorns dominated on both sides of the ball, amassing 406 yards of offense while holding the Sooners to 236 total yards.

Oklahoma fell to 4-2 with the loss and will need a strong finish to the year to have a shot at making the 12-team College Football Playoff. It has also led to many questions about the job security of head coach Brent Venables, who is 20-12 during his three-season tenure at Oklahoma.

"Brent Venables is not the guy. That's very clear now," one fan said .

The Sooners' defense has shown marked improvement under Venables, but the offense continues to struggle. Saturday's loss only reinforced these concerns. Venables has faced criticism for the program’s decision to start true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. over highly-touted five-star recruit Jackson Arnold, leaving many to question the direction of the offense.

Hawkins played all of the loss to Texas despite the team's struggles on offense.

"Brent Venables should be fired immediately," another fan said . "Who keeps a 5 star Quarterback on the bench while your 3 Star QB shows why he's a 3 star over and over and over and over again.

Venables is now 1-2 against Texas. He led Oklahoma to a win against the Longhorns last season but has been outscored 83-3 in the other two matchups.

"Brent Venables has failed to score a touchdown in two of his three Red River Rivalry games," a fan said . "He should be on a short leash and fired after next year if the offense doesn’t drastically improve."

Oklahoma will have a chance to bounce back against South Carolina next week.
