Kirby Smart and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs secured their fifth win of the 2024 college football season after defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 41-31 in Week 7.

Despite two turnovers, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck still had a solid game, completing 36-of-48 passes for a career-high 459 yards and three touchdowns. Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. did his best to keep up with Beck, tallying 306 yards through the air with three scores and a pick.

At one point in the game, Smart began to argue with an official after Van Buren ran out of bounds. In the heat of the moment, the ninth-year head coach bumped into the quarterback while jawing with the ref and shoved him out of the way.

Van Buren responded by glancing at Smart before walking away from the situation.

Normally, this kind of action would warrant a 15-yard penalty. However, despite the official standing right next to Smart, he did not blow the whistle or throw a flag.

UGA's offense was absolutely dominant during the game, outgaining Mississippi State 605-385. The score differential would have been much greater had Beck not thrown two interceptions, which led to 10 points for Mississippi State.

Georgia now sits at 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in SEC play, with its single loss coming against the Alabama Crimson Tide. UGA has another huge test coming up with a trip to Austin, Texas, to face the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.

Mississippi State, on the other hand, falls to 1-5 overall and has yet to secure its first conference win. They will get another stab at it at home against the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies next week.
