'Everybody Frustrated!' With Jets Offensive Performances

    By Adam Schultz,

The New York Jets' first five weeks of the season can be described as a mixed bag. At 2-3, their early season form has been inconsistent, but such is the nature of the NFL, if they beat the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night, they will lead the division.

While much has been made of head coach Robert Saleh's firing, the defense has been holding its own, averaging just 17 points allowed per game. However, the real issue is the offense.

As such, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich announced that passing game coordinator Todd Downing would take over the play-calling duties from Nathaniel Hackett.

That is a big change, and Downing has reflected on the first five weeks as the offense simply hasn't gotten rolling consistently.

"I think everybody gets frustrated when we don't put the product out there that we expect to," Downing said . "Everybody in this building works extremely hard and just because the results weren't there and some changes were made doesn't change everybody's intent when they walk into this building every day. I would be concerned if those competitors weren't frustrated with lack of production or lack of targets or lack of whatever. I think what's happened this week has given us a chance to really try to draw closer as a family."

Teams have a history of performing well for a short period after a head coaching change, and the Jets will be hoping that Saleh's firing can be a circuit-breaker and help get the offense back on track.

Of course, there is a scenario where it doesn't always work, as the Philadelphia Eagles made a defensive coordinator change last season with Sean Desai losing his role to Matt Patricia, but little improved.

However, the Jets are hopeful that it might spark something positive with Ulbrich now overseeing the operation and Downing the new voice in Rodgers' ear.

Time will tell if it does.
