Baker Mayfield Claps Back at Texas Following Disrespect After Beating OU

The Red River Rivalry took place on Saturday, marking the 95th straight season of Oklahoma and Texas meeting for a contest. The two meet halfway between Austin, TX, and Norman, OK, to play in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX.

Annually, Oklahoma and Texas provide one of the best matchups of the college football season. That wasn't the case this year. After the Sooners won in a thriller last season, plenty of trash talk was thrown around, as is the case in most rivalry wins.

The Longhorns routed Oklahoma in a 34-3 blowout victory, and they made sure to get their trash talk off after the game. This year, they planted a flag in the middle of the Cotton Bowl field, though they made sure to plant a Baker Mayfield jersey on the field before staking the flag in the ground.

Mayfield, during his time at Oklahoma, defeated Texas twice and lost to them once. He also lost to the Longhorns while he was the quarterback at Texas Tech in 2013.

The behavior is odd, though, as Mayfield last took a snap for the Sooners against Texas in 2017. It's been seven years since he played in the historic rivalry matchup.

Following a win in the NFL on Sunday, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a victory over the New Orleans Saints, Mayfield clapped back at the Longhorns.

“It’s just a kid from Austin, Texas, that went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games and has been rent free in their heads for almost a decade now,” Mayfield said. “So, yeah.”

The hatred from Texas and Oklahoma runs deep. It doesn't matter if a player attended the rival school one season ago or 30 seasons ago, the hatred stands all these years later.
