The College Football Playoff field is starting to take shape as we approach the midway point of October. Several teams have played themselves out of the conversation, while others have played themselves into it.

According to ESPN's Paul Finebaum, the USC Trojans are one of the teams to play themselves out of the College Football Playoff. The Trojans dropped to 3-3 after a loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions last weekend.

On "The Matt Barrie Show," the SEC Network analyst stated that after that loss, he feels the Trojans are out of the playoffs.

"We're sitting here in mid-October," Finebaum said. "You've got three losses, and you're out of the playoffs.

At one point, the Trojans appeared to be a team with a strong chance of making the playoffs. USC pulled off an upset against the LSU Tigers in Week 1 and climbed as high as No. 11 in the country. However, they suffered a last-second loss to the Michigan Wolverines. They were then upset as nearly double-digit favorites against the Minnesota Golden Gophers before losing last weekend's heartbreaker.

The Trojans' promising season, which initially seemed like a great opportunity to make their first College Football Playoff, now appears to be leading USC towards another offseason of trying to reclaim its former glory.

It’s not just USC. I’ve seen nearly every top 10 team struggle against inferior opponents this year. I guess the transfer portal has a lot to do with it. But something weird is going on.

Who cares. USC and UCLA destroyed the Pac 12. They can go screw themselves.
