Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers may have taken a big hit in the Heisman Trophy race after missing two games with a strained oblique, but could still have big things in his future.

A new mock draft from Mike Renner of CBS Sports has Ewers in the Top 10 next season, going to the New York Giants at the No. 7 overall pick and earning the chance to replace Daniel Jones.

Renner noted that Jones has seen a rebound in play in recent games, but suggested his middling success at the important position could lead the Giants to take a swing at a new franchise quarterback.

Though the Giants already made a $160 million investment in Jones, Renner suggested Ewers could ultimately replace him.

"Even with Daniel Jones' mini-resurgence the past few weeks, the Giants still need to set their sights higher at the position," Renner wrote. "Ewers has shown high-end play on the field the past two seasons when healthy. The 'when healthy' part is the key there as he's now missed time in three straight seasons. That may scare some off, but with Ewers' tools the risk is worth the reward at this point."

Ewers would be the third quarterback taken in next year's NFL Draft, with Miami signal-caller Cam Ward going at No. 2 overall to the Carolina Panthers and Colorado star Shedeur Sanders being taken by the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 4.

It's not clear where Ewers's stock could be headed. The Texas quarterback sparked some concern in the Longhorns' 34-3 win over No. 18 Oklahoma on Saturday after he missed some key throws and threw an interception on the team's opening drive.

Ewers admitted his miscues after the game, saying the team did what it needed to pull through.

"Overall, I think I need to play better," Ewers said, via Austin Statesman reporter David Eckert on X . "I think we did a good job overcoming some adversity early."
