Greg McElroy Reveals The Most Complete College Football Team In The Country

Week 8 of the college football season is upon us, and the top teams are starting to distance themselves from the rest of the pack.

Right now, five teams in the Top 10 are still undefeated: No. 1 Texas Longhorns, No. 2 Oregon Ducks, No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions, No. 6 Miami Hurricanes, and No. 9 Iowa State Cyclones.

A few of these teams faced big challenges in Week 7 but stayed unbeaten. Oregon took down Ohio State, Penn State held off USC, and Texas dominated Oklahoma.

On Monday, ESPN’s Greg McElroy discussed each team during the “ Always College Football ” podcast, calling Texas the “most complete team” in the country.

"Texas is the most complete team, and the scary thing is, they're just getting started," McElroy said.

He recapped Texas’ 34-3 win in the “Red River Rivalry,” highlighting how the Longhorns’ offense had a shaky start. Despite that, the defense stepped up in a big way, which, according to McElroy, is the true “sign of a complete team.”

"Because if you look at this game this past weekend, Texas, slow start in the game. They get off to a bit of a rusty start at quarterback, but this Texas defense, they were suffocating. Offense plays poorly early, defense raises their level. That is the sign of a complete team."

Although the offense struggled early, they bounced back to score 34 points and played strong football on both sides of the ball in the second half. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers went on to throw for 199 yards and a touchdown .

"What we've now found is that they can play complementary football," he said. "So I think Texas right now, based on what I've seen, is the most complete team, and I still don't think we've seen a 60-minute performance from them."

Texas is now in Year 4 of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure, and since taking over, he’s slowly rebuilt the program into a college football powerhouse.

Sarisian's Longhorns started with five wins in 2021, followed by eight in 2022, and then 12 wins in 2023, capped off with a College Football Playoff appearance. Now, in 2024, the Longhorns are off to a perfect 6-0 start.

The record this season doesn't speak for itself. Each win has been dominant, with the closest game being 31-12 over the defending national champion, Michigan Wolverines.

Texas' toughest opponent of the year is coming up in Week 8. It will face the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday night with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
