The New York Jets surprised fans a week ago after they announced that they had fired head coach Robert Saleh. It was surprising for some fans to hear about that announcement, even after their brutal loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

However, one former Jets assistant seemed not to be too surprised by the firing. Bill Belichick, who used to coach for Woody Johnson's Jets, noted that the decision was in character for the owner.

“Just seemed like a little early to pull the trigger on that one to me,” Belichick said on his podcast "Let’s Go! " “But not out of character for the owner. Woody’s always been kind of hard to predict what he’s gonna do. Some of it just is hard to make sense out of, but I think Saleh did a good job there."

Belichick also noted that he felt that Saleh did a solid job in New York, as he helped lead the defense to new heights after struggling a few years ago. With Aaron Rodgers' return, Belichick felt like the Jets should have given Saleh a longer leash.

It's also worth noting that Belichick has quite the history with Woody Johnson. As mentioned, Bill was a former defensive coordinator for the Jets under Bill Parcells. When Parcells stepped down from his post, Belichick was supposed to take over the team.

However, Belichick surprised everyone by announcing on his first day that he was stepping down from being the coach of the Jets. The coach cited concerns with Johnson as the reason why. It seems like those concerns are fresh in Belichick's mind after the Saleh firing.

After leaving the Jets, Belichick would go on to have an all-time career for New York's rival, the New England Patriots. Belichick piloted the Patriots to six Super Bowls and completely dominated the AFC East during his time in Foxborough.
