Robert Saleh's Replacement Drops Blunt Admission About Jets-Bills Game

On “Monday Night Football,” the New York Jets suffered their first loss since parting ways with head coach Robert Saleh, falling to the Buffalo Bills 23-20. Two missed field goals ended up being the difference in a game that came down to the end.

Saleh was fired after the Jets’ 23-17 loss to the Vikings in Week 5, and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich stepped in as interim head coach.

Other than one short stint as an assistant special teams coordinator, Ulbrich has been on the defensive side of the ball his entire NFL career, including during his playing days.

That wasn't the case on Monday night in Week 6, as he was also responsible for overseeing Todd Downing's (New Jets play caller) offense for the first time. Following the loss, Ulbrich spoke to the media about the challenges he faced in his head coaching debut.

"It was a different challenge, for sure," Ulbrich admitted. "Just calling the game is a challenge in itself. Fortunately, a great support staff. I got eyes above me, constantly in my ear, talking to me and guiding me. So, it was a challenge, but it was not overwhelming by any means."

The Jets' offense was better than it has been in recent weeks. They ran the ball effectively, gaining 121 yards on the ground and passing for 272 yards .

However, the defense didn't perform up to its standard. They got thrashed on the ground, especially early in the game. The Bills finished with 149 rushing yards.

"It's not the standard of this defense," Ulbrich added . "It wasn't the defense we're accustomed to, especially against the run."

Ulbrich is in his fourth season with the Jets. Before heading to New York, he spent 2015-20 with the Atlanta Falcons, where he served as the linebackers coach and the defensive coordinator.

In Week 7, the 2-4 Jets will head to Pittsburgh to face the 4-2 Steelers. Kickoff on "Sunday Night Football" is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET.
