Chiefs Could Reunite with Former Super Bowl Winner Amid WR Concerns

Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season features the Kansas City Chiefs returning to action after resting up during their bye week. The defending Super Bowl Champions are enjoying a perfect 5-0 start to the campaign and will look to keep the success coming when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The Chiefs have done a lot of great things to get off to a strong start, however, the current situation is far from perfect. A bare-bones wide receiver room has been one of the team's biggest concerns as wideouts Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice are sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Some Chiefs fans were hoping to see the franchise target a big-name WR like Davante Adams or Amari Cooper, but that isn't possible after the duo was traded on Tuesday . With that in mind, one of those deals has led to the perfect target becoming available for Kansas City.

After acquiring Cooper earlier in the day, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have released WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Valdes-Scantling signed a one-year contract with the Bills back in May. Unfortunately, the move to Buffalo didn't pay off as the veteran wideout only registered two catches for 26 receiving yards in six games. With his snap count dwindling each week, the writing was on the wall for the 30-year-old's exit.

Just because things didn't work out with the Bills doesn't mean the Chiefs shouldn't take a swing on the experienced pass-catchers.

After all, the Kansas City coaching staff and quarterback Patrick Mahomes are more than familiar with Valdes-Scantling. The former 2018 fifth-rounder spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Chiefs, registering 63 catches for 1,002 receiving yards and three touchdowns across 33 games.

Valdes-Scantling also posted a 15-250-3 stat line across the last two postseasons, which included back-to-back Super Bowl rings.

In 98 career games played with the Chiefs, Bills and Green Bay Packers, Valdes-Scantling has amassed 3,181 yards and 16 TDs on 188 receptions. Even if he won't dominate opposing defenses, he's fast enough to add another dimension to Kansas City's attack and his chemistry with Mahomes could pay off as the season progresses.

Few free-agent wide receivers have as much playoff success and experience as Valdes-Scantling. If the Chiefs are even slightly interested in a reunion, they must act fast before another Super Bowl contender calls the veteran playmaker's agent.
