Chiefs Linked to Reunion With 2-Time Champion Amid Major WR Trades

It has been more than two weeks since the Chiefs lost star receiver Rashee Rice to a knee injury, and though the expectation was that Kansas City would move quickly to find a replacement, that has not been the case. The team is coming off a bye week and remains undefeated at 5-0, so the rush to add a new guy is perhaps somewhat diminished.

Elsewhere, though, the Chiefs watched two potential AFC rivals make serious upgrades in their receiver room on Tuesday, with the Jets adding star Davante Adams in a trade from the Raiders and the Bills bringing in Amari Cooper from the Browns.

There was speculation that the Chiefs could get involved in trade talks on either of those players, but no significant talks were ever reported.

But there's a chance that the Chiefs could reap some benefits, at least from the Cooper move. To make room for their new addition, the Bills let go former Chiefs receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and rather than making a bold move via trade, speculation holds that bringing back MVS would be a very Chiefs-y kind of move.

Here's what ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler wrote on the subject on Wednesday:

"The receiver-depleted Chiefs haven't been overly aggressive on the market to this point. As was told to me, coach Andy Reid values receivers who either have played in his system or know it well. Finding a plug-and-play situation isn't always clear cut. That said, Kansas City will stay nimble. ...

"The Bills just released Marquez Valdes-Scantling , so perhaps the Chiefs add a familiar face in the short term."

Valdes-Scantling did not make much of an impact with the Bills, recording 26 yards on two catches. A reliable, if unspectacular, veteran, MVS had 42 receptions for 687 yards in 2022 with the Chiefs, but slipped to 21 catches and 315 yards last year.
