DK Metcalf's Blunt Admission on Crucial Mistake in Seahawks-49ers Game

DK Metcalf only made matters worse for his team during Thursday's hard-fought 36-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Not only did the star wideout finish with just three catches on 11 targets, but a frustrated Metcalf was also caught by TV cameras on the sideline yelling at first-year offensive coordinator Ben Grubb through a headset.

Seattle, 3-3 after falling to the reigning NFC champions, now turns its focus to a Week 7 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.

Given the opportunity on Wednesday to discuss what took place against San Francisco, though, a conciliatory Metcalf shouldered all the blame for Geno Smith's second interception.

"Yeah, that was definitely my fault," he said, per team reporter John Boyle. "I was drifting upfield, saw open space, trying to do too much and let the route when I should have been staying flat."

So much for a bubbling notion among some Seahawks fans that Metcalf has put his interests ahead of the team's at points this season. The 26-year-old even called his veteran quarterback over the weekend to admit his mistake, also explaining why it won't happen again.

"We talked on the phone Sunday, and I told him that was my fault about drifting," Metcalf said of he and Smith. "It just goes back to practice habits. You've got to practice like every day is the last play, every play is you're down seven or it's the fourth quarter and you got to make the catch. I think it's just me getting into that mentality during practice, so when I get in the game there's no second thought about it."

A two-time Pro Bowler, Metcalf leads Seattle with 31 catches for 469 yards and two touchdowns through six games. Don't be surprised if he's sharper going forward, helping the Seahawks on their quest to emerge from a crowded middle in the NFC.

I appreciate the honesty. I'll appreciate it a lot more if he comes up with the catch much more often on contested passes. For his size, he should be winning most of those 50-50 balls. He needs better body control/position to block the defenders from disrupting the catch.

Sorry, but Metcalf with his huge body & wingspan can only seem to catch a pass when he is wide open.🙄 I will admit, he doesn't get interference calls when he should! Tyler Lockett is & should be your go to!
