Based on their teams' performance, several college football coaches are likely to be at risk of losing their jobs. Some of these coaches may be let go this season, while others could face intense pressure next season.

One of those coaches could be Brent Venables of the Oklahoma Sooners. Venables has had an up-and-down tenure at Oklahoma. The Sooners went 6-7 in his first season, marking the first losing season since 1998, a decade Sooners fans hope to forget.

In 2023, Venables showed promise as Oklahoma went 10-3 and beat the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.

However, this year it appears the team has taken a step back. Oklahoma is sitting at 4-2, with both losses coming against ranked opponents, including a 34-3 loss to Texas last Saturday.

On the "Paul Finebaum Show," the SEC Network analyst stated that fans might begin calling for Venables' job if there are a few more losses.

"Beating Texas last year helped preserve his position," Finebaum said. "And Joe Castiglione gave him that big extension to quiet everyone down. If he's not careful, with a few more losses, fans are going to start chirping again. That is the nature of being at a school like Oklahoma."

Venables has done a lot of good at Oklahoma. He has transformed the team culture and significantly improved a defense that was one of college football's worst for a decade or more. According to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) , Oklahoma's defense is ranked as the ninth most efficient unit in the country.

While Venables made defense the main focus, the offense has declined. In 2023, Oklahoma ranked No. 3 in yards per game, No. 35 in rushing yards per game, No. 6 in passing yards per game and No. 3 in points per game with 41.7.

This season, Oklahoma ranks No. 126 in total offense, No. 100 in rushing offense, No. 123 in passing offense and No. 96 in scoring offense at 24.3 points per game. Oklahoma's offense also ranks No. 104 in efficiency.

So, while Venables has seemingly addressed Oklahoma's longstanding issue, a new one has arisen. If he also doesn't resolve this one, Oklahoma might start searching for a replacement.
