Jets Tabbed Trade 'Suitor' for Former No. 1 Pick to Take Over for Aaron Rodgers

On Tuesday, the NFL recorded an impressive spate of trade activity, with three players changing addresses. Davante Adams went from the Raiders to the Jets, of course, and Amari Cooper went to Buffalo from Cleveland. On the same day, defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris was sent from the Jaguars to the Seahawks.

On Wednesday, another NFL trade hit the books, as the Texans sent running back Cam Akers back to the Vikings.

Speaking on “Get Up” on Thursday, ESPN insider Adam Schefter said that the expectation around the league is that a busy trade deadline is ahead—and that could include former No. 1 pick and current Panthers backup Bryce Young.

In fact, at Bleacher Report, on the site’s weekly “ NFL Trade Big Board ,” Young is listed as the No. 9 player most likely to be dealt—with the Jets as one of two (the Titans are the other) “potential suitors.”

As B/R wrote this week: “The list of potentially interested teams (for Young) includes those that don't have a clear succession plan in place at quarterback. The Jets, who employ a 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers, could be a candidate.”

And while publicly, the Panthers have said they do not want to deal Young, Schefter held open that possibility and had Young first on his list of players who could be traded before the No. 5 deadline.

“Bryce Young, Carolina says it does not want to trade him. But stands change,” Schefter said.

A Jets deal does make sense, if New York believes it can develop Young behind Rodgers in the next year. But the Jets already gave up a Day 2 pick to get Adams.

What does seem clear is that the NFL could be in for a busy few weeks. Typically, the league’s trade deadline produces a lot more conversation than actual trades, but with four deals already in the can and a long way to go, 2024 could be different.

“The trade deadline is over three weeks away,” Schefter said. “Other teams are going to see this, it is going to make teams even less inhibited (to trades) than they were. It should lead to even more moves leading up to the Nov. 5 trade deadline in the National Football League. We had (four) this week? That tells you that there will be more coming in future—and we’ve got a lot of people to pay attention to in the weeks to come.”
