Steelers' Justin Fields Shares Honest Opinion of His Play This Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers share the lead with the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North with a 4-2 record, and they've done it with their backup quarterback.

Justin Fields has been under center all season thanks to the calf injury that starter Russell Wilson suffered in training camp, then aggravated the week before the season began.

But Wilson is healthy and has been a full participant in practice since last week, and all expectations are that he's ready to play.

While the Steelers are 4-2, it's been largely because of the play of the defense. The offense has eclipsed the 20-point mark just twice this season. Fields' play has been inconsistent at best, although he may have played his best and most complete game in the 32-13 win over the Raiders last week. But is it too little, too late to secure the permanent starting job?

“I mean, I don’t think I’ve played good enough, if I’m being real with you ,” Fields said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review . “If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort [question] of who should be playing and who should not. At the end of the day, we got a few wins — of course I’m glad about that. But there are areas that I can get better at, and I’m just gonna continue to work on those and continue to get better.”

Fields knows he's fortunate to have gotten the opportunity that he did.

"[B]ut it was a great opportunity for me ,” Fields said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “Of course, I’m grateful for the opportunity. I did get those first six weeks, and we’ll just see what happens.”
