Rece Davis Names Overlooked College Football Team That is a ‘Force’ in the Big 12

The BYU Cougars and Iowa State Cyclones have been the talk of the Big 12 after a 6-0 start. The Kansas State Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils are also off to promising starts, heading into Week 8 at 5-1. But there may be an overlooked contender who is ready to make waves in the title race.

Another common similarity between BYU and Iowa State is that they are both 3-0 in conference play and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are as well. Texas Tech is 5-1 on the season and is coming off a 28-22 win over the Arizona Wildcats in its last game.

The hot start for Texas Tech is promising, but the program has not been consistent. Texas Tech's last top-25 ranking was in 2018, when the Red Raiders' highest ranking was 25th that season before finishing at 5-7. The program's best season this century was in 2008, when former head coach Mike Leach led the team to an 11-2 finish.

Quarterback Behren Morton and running back Tahj Brooks are the focal points of the Red Raiders' offense. Morton has 1,640 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, while Brooks leads the team with 679 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

On a recent " College GameDay Podcast " episode, Rece Davis pointed to how important Brooks is to Texas Tech's success and called the team a "force" in the Big 12. Brooks missed the game against the Washington State Cougars due to injury, and the Red Raiders lost without his contributions on the field.

"People have forgotten about Texas Tech completely, including me," Davis said. "Not forgotten, but like you said, you go look and remind yourself every week they're unbeaten in Big 12 play if memory serves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the game they lost to Washington State, they didn't have Tahj Brooks. So, they lost one game without their best player. So, they're a force in the Big 12."

Morton, Brooks, and Texas Tech take on a struggling Baylor Bears team in Week 8. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
