The Week 8 college football slate features some incredible matchups that could shake up the rankings. While fans wait for a few big-time games, like No. 1 Texas versus No. 5 Georgia and No. 7 Alabama versus No. 11 Tennessee, a Friday night bout in the ACC had heads turning.
The Duke Blue Devils defeated the Florida State Seminoles 23-17, earning their first win over FSU in program history.
With the loss, the Seminoles fell to 1-6 on the season, marking their worst start in decades. While FSU played a substandard game on both ends of the field, some fans believe the biggest issue with the program is on the sideline.
Following the Seminoles' loss to the Blue Devils, some fans called for the firing of FSU head coach Mike Norvell.
A few fan reactions calling for Norvell's dismissal are attached below.
"Ok now that it’s over … FIRE MIKE NORVELL!!!!!!" said one fan.
"This team is so pathetic. I don’t care how much the buyout is, fire norvell tonight. Forfeit the season and send the entire team packing. Not a soul on this team deserves to play another down." said another fan.
"I wasnt in the fire Norvell camp, but its hard not to think it," mentioned one fan.
"FSU is a very sad program. I would fire norvell." said one fan.
"Alford isn’t going to fire him, he’s getting fire when Norvell is eventually let go. He will ride the ship into the sea." said another fan.
Norvell's tenure with the Seminoles began in 2020. In his first year with the program, FSU ended the season with a 3-6 record. It was a rough start for Norvell in Tallahassee, but he got Florida State back on top of the college football world in 2023.
FSU ended the 2023 season with a 13-1 record, winning the ACC title game and falling to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl.
After the successful season, Florida State entered the 2024 season as the No. 10 team in the nation. They began the year with an ACC matchup against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Seminoles were stunned, 24-21 in Week 0 and the rollercoaster has continued to fall at a rapid rate.
Much of the Seminoles' problems stem from the quarterback position. They entered the year with Oregon State transfer DJ Uiagalelei as the starter and have since given snaps to backup Brock Glenn and freshman Luke Kromenhoek.
Uiagalelei recently underwent hand surgery, keeping him on the sideline for at least several weeks. Glenn has been the starter for the Seminoles.
The second-year quarterback finished the loss to Duke with two interceptions, completing 9-of-19 pass attempts.
FSU's offense has averaged 15 points per game. The Seminoles have a couple of stars on the defensive end like Patrick Payton and Joshua Farmer, but constant issues on offense have been the difference maker.
Given the struggles, especially after a national title-hopeful season in 2023, fans believe the falloff for the Seminoles should result in firing Mike Norvell.
