Dolphins Sign QB to Active Roster Amid Tua Tagovailoa Career Update

On Saturday, the Miami Dolphins added a quarterback to their 53-man roster one day before the team is set to play the Indianapolis Colts. The 2-3 Dolphins are trying to stay in the playoff hunt early in the season after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 2.

Per a report by The Athletic's Dianna Russini Saturday morning, Tagovailoa and Miami have made a decision on his return to the playing field. The Dolphins plan to open the Pro Bowl quarterback's 21-day practice window after being placed on injured reserve after Week 2.

Miami could have Tagovailoa back as soon as their Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 27.

With Tagovailoa set to rejoin the 53-man roster next week, the Dolphins made a choice to add a quarterback from the practice squad. Per an announcement by the Dolphins on X, the team signed Tim Boyle to the active roster.

"We have signed QB Tim Boyle to the active roster off the practice squad and placed LS Blake Ferguson on the reserve/non-football illness," per the statement. "We also signed LS Matt Overton to the practice squad and elevated him and CB Nik Needham to the active roster."

Boyle has played in one game for the Dolphins this season. The 30-year-old journeyman went 7-of-13 for 79 yards in Miami's 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Dolphins have two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster in Week 7, Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson. Huntley will start for the Dolphins on Sunday.

Huntley has a 1-1 record in the two starts he's made for the Dolphins this season. The former Baltimore Ravens quarterback is 32-of-53 passing for 290 yards and one interception. He has thrown no touchdown passes.
