Vikings rule Hockenson and Risner out, waive Jackson, elevate 2

Minnesota Vikings star tight end T.J. Hockenson will not make his season debut on Sunday against his old team.

The club officially ruled Hockenson, who is still on injured reserve as he works his way back from a torn ACL suffered late last season against the Detroit Lions, out of this weekend’s game on Saturday. Guard Dalton Risner, who is also on injured reserve but returned to practice, also won’t play on Sunday.

The Purple and Gold also made a series of other roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game, waiving wide receiver Trishton Jackson and signing tight end Robert Tonyan from the practice squad to serve as the third tight end with Hockenson still sidelined.

Additionally, the Vikings elevated defensive tackle Jalen Redmond and edge Bo Richter for Sunday’s game. They could play a large role if Harrison Phillips or Patrick Jones II, who are both questionable against the Lions, are forced to sit out.

Jackson appeared in two games so far this season, playing just 11 total snaps, but never recorded a touch. Still, the Vikings will likely try to get him back on the practice squad.

Tonyan has appeared in three games this season, playing 39 total snaps, but hasn’t recorded a touch.

Redmond and Richter have also each played in two games this season, Richter serving more on special teams while Redmond accrued a couple pressures and a sack against Houston.

Hockenson's 21-day practice window opened on Oct. 4, so he'll either be activated for Minnesota's next game on Thursday at the Rams or the following day to be ready for the Nov. 3 matchup with Indianapolis. Risner just returned to practice this past week and seems more likely to return against either Indianapolis or the following week at Jacksonville.

The Vikings and Lions are set to play at noon on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
