Blackhawks & Sabres Go For 10-Man Brawl After Huge Open-Ice Hit

The Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres game turned chaotic on Saturday night, as tensions boiled over into a massive 10-man brawl with just a few minutes to go but the matchup still undecided.

The altercation was sparked by Sabres forward Peyton Krebs, who delivered a huge open-ice hit on Chicago’s Philipp Kurashev during the third period with around 5:35 left to play.

Right after Krebs' hit on Kurashev, new Blackhawks forward Tyler Bertuzzi rushed toward the Sabres player and wasted no time getting into a fight with him to defend his teammate.

Bertuzzi dropped his gloves and engaged Krebs in a fight, and the moment fists started flying between the two, every skater on the ice joined in, creating a full-blown line brawl.

All 10 skaters on the ice grabbed an opponent and by the time the dust settled, two Sabres and three Blackhawks had been sent to the penalty box.

With the score at 3–2 in favor of Buffalo at the time of the brawl, the Sabres ultimately added an empty-netter to seal the 4–2 victory. Buffalo moved to a 2-4-1 record and Chicago dropped to 2-3-1 in the early season.

Though the brawl stole the headlines, the game itself was rather competitive up to the 5:30 minute mark that set the stage for the full-blown brawl.

Buffalo’s Tage Thompson led the Sabres with 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) while Chicago’s Craig Smith scored twice keeping the Hawks at an arm's reach of tying the game late.

Chicago's efforts and a wasted late power-play opportunity saw the Sabres walk away with the victory after scoring an empty-netter with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.
