Chiefs' 'Aggressive' Attempt to Trade for Patrick Mahomes Help Hindered for Petty Reason

The Chiefs will put their 5-0 record on the against the 49ers on Sunday afternoon on the road, and while the Super Bowl rematch may have lost some luster because of San Francisco's slow start (3-3), the 49ers are still a slight favorite to get the win.

For the Chiefs, the game could serves as a reminder that they've got some roster work to do. In the wake of the knee injury suffered by star reciever Rashee Rice, and with Hollywood Brown also out for the regular season, at least, the team has been able to piece together just enough targets for Patrick Mahomes to utilize and grind out wins.

But the receiving crew, as it stands, is just not enough for Mahomes. Tight end Travis Kelce leads the team with 24 receptions (tied with Rice), but the first healthy receiver on the stat sheet now is rookei Xavier Worthy, with just 12 catches for 179 yards.

The Chiefs dusted off JuJu Smith-Schuster in Week 5 (seven catches, 130 yards), but his dodgy knee and litany of health issues make him an unreliable contributor.

Thus, CBS Sports reports this week that the Chiefs will ramp up efforts to add another Mahomes target to the roster. But they'll be doing so while hindered by a bit of jealousy from the other 31 NFL teams.

"Sources believe the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers will be most aggressive in adding another receiver before the deadline gets here," the site's Jonathan Jones reported on Saturday.

But, Jones reports, that won't be easy, because the rest of the league really does not want Kansas City to win three straight Super Bowls.

He wrote: "Sources say the team is 'week to week' in its evaluation of receivers. The two-time defending champions believe the price to acquire a receiver is higher for them than other teams as the rest of the league hopes to prevent the first three-peat in NFL history."

The Chiefs have, indeed, won the last two Super Bowls, and they've done so with a mishmash of receivers that has included since-departed options like Kadarius Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, as well as players who left and returned like Mecole Hardman and Smith-Schuster.

In the end, Toney or MVS could yet return, but in the meantime, the Chiefs will keep looking for other options.
