Paul Finebaum Names Historic College Football Program That is an ‘Absolute Trainwreck’

There have been growing pains throughout Kalen DeBoer's first season as Alabama's head coach. The Crimson Tide have lost two of their past three games, including a loss to Tennessee this weekend.

After winning the SEC Championship and making the College Football Playoff last season under Nick Saban, the Tide now have two losses through eight weeks of action. This is the first time Alabama has had two blemishes on its record before November since 2007, Saban's first season in Tuscaloosa.

ESPN college football host Paul Finebaum has a brutal take on the Alabama Crimson Tide and first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer following their disappointing loss this weekend.

“Alabama is an absolute trainwreck," Finebaum told ESPN host Matt Barrie on Sunday. "There’s, there’s no sugar coating it. And I’m sure Kalen DeBoer and his cast of minions can try to act like they control — I actually heard somebody say Alabama controls its own destiny. For what the end of the world?"

No. 7 Alabama was in the driver's seat in Knoxville for most of the game against the No. 11 Volunteers. The Tide held a 7-0 at the half and maintained a narrow lead until late in the third quarter before Tennessee tailback Dylan Sampson's rushing touchdown made it 14-10 Vols.

Alabama and star quarterback Jalen Milroe answered immediately with a touchdown drive of their own. But that score would be the last for the Tide, as Tennessee scored ten unanswered points to secure its second win over Alabama in the last three years.

“I mean, every time they had a chance to put that game a little bit further away from Tennessee or to come back in the game, they made a stupid penalty, they made a stupid decision," Finebaum said. "Ultimately, who does that rest with? Is that the players, or was that the coaching? To me, this does not look like a well-coached team.”

The Tide were penalized a whopping 15 times for 115 yards. Milroe had an uncharacteristic day, throwing two interceptions and recording just one total touchdown. The Heisman Trophy contender entered the day tied for the most total scores in the country (23).

Now Alabama needs some help to get back into SEC championship contention with two ranked opponents up next in No. 21 Missouri and No. 8 LSU.

“Why would you now believe that Alabama, after what we’ve seen the last three weeks, is now going to get off the canvas beat Missouri, which is not great but still formidable, anybody is formidable for Alabama right now, and then go to Baton Rouge and beat LSU after what we saw from LSU last night," Finebaum said.

Alabama (5-2, 2-2 SEC) dropped to No. 15 in the AP Poll as it prepares to take on Missouri (6-1, 2-1 SEC) at home in Week 9. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Despite 3 consecutive bad games, Bama has a reasonable chance to win its remaining 5 regular season games and finish 10-2.
