Another College Football Head Coach Has Been Fired After Week 8

Following Week 8 of the 2024 college football season, some programs have started to make big decisions with their coaching staff.

The Oklahoma Sooners parted ways with their offensive coordinator, Seth Littrell, following a 35-9 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. And the East Carolina Pirates, after falling to 3-4 on the season, have fired head coach Mike Houston.

However, another big head coaching decision has been revealed on Sunday night. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel , the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles have dismissed their own head coach, Will Hall.

The Eagles made this decision following their 44-28 Week 8 loss to the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Southern Miss now sits at 1-6 on the season and 0-3 in Sun Belt play, and it has lost five straight games by double-digits.

Hall was in his fourth season as the Golden Eagles head coach after being hired by the program in late 2020. After a promising second season with Southern Miss in 2022 that saw the team end its season with a LendingTree Bowl win, Hall's team has gone 4-15 over the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Over his seven games this year, Hall produced one of the worst offenses in the nation. The Golden Eagles ranked towards the bottom in total yardage per game (301.7) and points per game (18.3). His defense wasn't much better, allowing 229.6 rushing yards per game, among the worst in all of college football.

Southern Miss athletic director Jeremy McClain made a statement following the decision to let go of Hall.

"We are grateful to Will and his family for their dedication to Southern Miss over the past four years,” McClain said. “Will poured his heart and soul into this program and into shaping these young men. Unfortunately, the results on the field didn’t align with our shared goals and expectations.”

With five games left to go, the Golden Eagles will prepare for their upcoming contest against the James Madison Dukes as they search for their 23rd coach in program history.
