The New York Giants sat QB Daniel Jones down on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles , which is the first clear step toward moving on from him completely.

Head coach Brian Daboll , who pulled Jones out of the 25-point blowout loss at home in favor of backup Drew Lock , said after the game that the starting job still belongs to Jones.

"[We] made a change in the fourth quarter when it was 28-3, we had 100 yards, just to create a spark," Daboll said . "Daniel [Jones] will be the quarterback going forward. But obviously, we didn’t do enough offensively -- hardly had any yards, no points. ... [It was] just not a good day all the way around. No excuses. Gotta play better, coach better."

However, it's going to be hard for the Giants to play any better with all the same ingredients in an offense that hasn't been able to get much cooking all season long. New York (2-5) is averaging just north of 14 points per game, which is by far the worst in the NFC East Division.

One potential opportunity for drastic change involves trading for Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams -- a team that had high hopes after making the playoffs last season but that has been ravaged by injury in 2024.

"🚨TRENDING: New York #Giants fans are pushing for the team to trade for #Rams star QB Matthew Stafford at the #NFL trade deadline 👀," MLFootball posted to X on October 15 . "Would immediately make the G-Men a serious playoff threat."

An immediate "playoff threat" is probably overstating the possibilities of this particular hypothetical scenario. However, the Giants would be a much more viable team in the NFC Wildcard race over their final 10 games if they nabbed the 36-year-old Super Bowl-winning signal caller of the Rams.

Stafford has thrown for north of 57,000 passing yards and counting across his NFL career and should be able to utilize star rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers right away just as effectively as he did with Puka Nacua in L.A. last season.

Both Stafford and Jones are playing on four-year contracts worth $160 million total that expire at the end of the 2026 season. The Giants couldn't afford to bring Stafford into the mix without unloading Jones, either on the Rams or elsewhere in the league ahead of the November 5 trade deadline.

In order for L.A. to give up Stafford and take back a lesser player in Jones, New York would probably have to agree to pay a significant portion of Jones' salary in this season and the next, making him inexpensive for the Rams.

Los Angeles would also need to be willing to punt on this season and start stocking up on draft picks for 2025. That could happen, though the Rams (2-4) just bested the Las Vegas Raiders for their second win of the season.

Star wideout Cooper Kupp is also expected back from injury in Week 8, which might tempt the Rams into thinking they have a shot to play their way back into the Wildcard race. That, in turn, would add another wrinkle of complication to any potential trade of Stafford to the Giants.
