Mike Tomlin's Stern Response to Justin Fields Rumor Before Steelers-Jets

Russell Wilson's first start in Pittsburgh Steelers threads was a success. Against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, Wilson showed that there's still plenty of gas left in his tank and that the Steelers were right in choosing him to start under center over Justin Fields.

A lot of people believed that the door was still open for Fields to see action opposite the Jets even after it was announced by Pittsburgh that Wilson would be taking over the QB1 role. Mike Tomlin squashed that notion following his team's 37-15 win at Acrisure Stadium.

"I did not," Tomlin told reporters when he was asked about whether he thought about sending Fields to the field during the Jets game.

Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 start to the 2024 NFL regular season while Wilson recuperated from injury. When it was clear that Wilson could finally play, the Steelers handed him the keys to the QB1 job, relegating Fields to the backup role.

Wilson had a shaky start in the Jets game but eventually found his rhythm. He finished the Steelers’ Week 7 assignment with 264 passing yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions while completing 16 of his 29 throws.

Barring an injury or horrid play under center, it is perhaps safe to say that Wilson will be the Steelers’ QB starter for the rest of the season.
