QB at a Loss to Explain Tyreek Hill's Worst Day as a Dolphin

    By Sean Deveney,

There was all of 1:51 remaining on the game clock in Indianapolis on Sunday when Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill caught an eight-yard throw from Tim Boyle, who is one of three quarterbacks the Dolphins have used since star Tua Tagovailoa went down with a concussion in Week 2.

The catch was the first play in the Dolphins' attempt to come back from a 16-10 deficit against the Colts, a winnable game that Miami was about to squander. But it was notable because it was, amazingly, the first catch of the game for Hill, ensuring that he would not be shut out of the receiving stat sheet for the first time in his Dolplins career.

Alas, that was the end of Hill's production: one catch, eight yards. The Dolphins' last-ditch comeback attempt ended, too, with the 16-10 loss.

But after the game, the near goose-egg for Hill lingered. It would not have been the first time Hill played a game without a catch, but it has not happened since he arrived in Miami in 2022.

Hill had three receiving shutouts in Kansas City, and has five games in his career with just one catch--all of which took place with the Chiefs, until Sunday. It was not much better for star teammate Jaylen Waddle, who had one catch for just 11 yards on the day.

After the game, Boyle, who came on in relief of starter Tyler Huntley (injured shoulder) had a hard time explaining the lack of production from Hill, and Waddle for that matter. He mentioned that the Colts' defense added some focus to those two but then, defenses always focus on Hill and Waddle when facing the Dolphins. They usually produce nonetheless.

"When you have really good players like that, the defense is game planning them too. So, a lot of the game they were, they were (inaudible) Tyreek. We see a lot of that," Boyle said.

"This defense was primarily going into the game a one high structure defense, and they played us a majority two high, and that’s to take away our guys outside. So, we took what the defense gave us, but we got to find ways to get those guys the ball, because they’re really good players."

Again, the Dolphins see a lot of two-high safety alignments from defenses. It's not new. They were just entirely unable to get the ball to their two best playmakers for nearly the entire game.
