The Minnesota Golden Gophers women's hockey team defeated the Minnesota State Mavericks in overtime, 3-2, in Mankato on Saturday night.

With the win, the Gophers (6-3-1, 2-3-1) finish off the two-game series sweep of the Mavericks (2-4, 0-4).

Peyton Hemp scored the game-winning goal in the extra period, thanks to assists from Natalie Mlynkova and Nelli Laitinen

Hemp started the scoring on the night as well, tallying her second power play goal in two games midway through the first period. The goal was assisted by Abbey Murphy and Josefin Bouveng. Minnesota led 1-0 after one period.

The Mavericks took their first lead of the weekend after scoring two unanswered goals in the second period. Minnesota outshot Minnesota State 11-6 in the period but failed to put anything in the back of the opponent's net.

Halfway through the third period, Minnesota tied the game at two thanks to a goal from Ava Lindsay, the sophomore forward's first goal of the season. It was assisted by Sydney Morrow and Skylar Vetter. That's how the game ended up going to overtime, where Hemp scored her fourth goal of the season and second of the game to win it.

In the two-game series, Hemp scored three goals total. The overtime goal was Hemp's eighth career game-winner.

"Snuck one out here in overtime. Obviously getting that tying goal there in the third, late, by Ava [Lindsay] was big, and Peyton [Hemp] finishing in OT was huge for us," head coach Brad Frost said. "Credit to Mankato, they played extremely hard. We need to do a little better job from the drop of the puck, but we will do that as we continue to go forward. Looking forward to getting up to Bemidji next week."

The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 37-13 for the game.

Minnesota will next take on Bemidji State on the road on Nov. 1 and 2.
