The Morning After: Packers 30 Jaguars 27

The Green Bay Packers escaped from Jacksonville with a 30-27 victory.

They led by double digits two separate times. They fell behind 17-13 at one point, and blew a 27-17 lead to force themselves into a game winning drive.

Malik Willis, the backup quarterback who has answered the bell anytime he has been asked, did so again.

A big completion to Jayden Reed was the difference, and the Packers were victorious again.

More on that and some of our other thoughts.

Malik Willis hands the ball to Josh Jacobs

    Malik Willis

What a story this guy is.

Malik Willis was traded for at the end of August for the equivalent of a ham sandwich.

He's had to play extended minutes in three games this season.

The Packers have won all three of them.

This one, he entered in relief of Jordan Love, who exited Sunday's game with a groin injury.

Willis was tested immediately as the Packers trailed 17-13 in his first full series on the field.

A quick three-and-out and the Packers would have entered the danger zone.

Instead, Willis converted a third down to Dontayvion Wicks. He ran for 20 yards, and that drive was capped off with a touchdown run from Josh Jacobs.

Later in the game, Willis showed off his skill set with the score tied at 27.

He rolled to his right and unleashed a wheel route to Jayden Reed.

A 51-yard catch and run from Willis to Reed helped set up the game-winning field goal.

Willis is one of the best stories in the NFL this season, and might be the best trade that any team has made.

It's not an exaggeration to say that Willis has saved Green Bay's season with his play.

What a remarkable turn of events for a quarterback who could have been on his way out of the NFL if not for the Packers making the call to trade for him.

    Brandon McManus

    Nothing spectacular here, just straightforward.

The Packers have a reliable kicker. They have not had that since the 2022 season.

Brandon McManus made an easy kick for a game-winner but has not missed a kick since arriving in Green Bay.

That reliability is something that could matter as the calendar turns to November and the games get bigger.

    Chris Brooks

Brooks is not asked to be a star. He's a role player.

The last two weeks, he's played his role very well.

He's emerged as Green Bay's go-to player in pass protection.

This week, he was solid in pass protection, but also showed his football IQ.

With Josh Jacobs exiting the game on the final possession, the Packers trusted Brooks to carry the ball on the next play.

The Jaguars, with only one timeout left, tried to let Brooks score as a way to get the ball back and keep that timeout.

Brooks, who has never scored a touchdown in the NFL, recognized that and dropped to the ground after securing the first down.

It would have been easy for Brooks to run over the goal line and force the defense to make one final stop.

Such a play may have even been forgivable considering players are taught to score any time they touch the ball.

Instead, Brooks did what was best for the team. That type of selfless play helps win games, and on Sunday it did just that.

    Josh Jacobs

What a player this guy is.

Jacobs was a topic of conversation during the offseason and this week. Each conversation surrounded the idea that perhaps he had lost a step or was not worth the contract Green Bay gave him in the offseason.

The reality is that Jacobs has been asked to carry his team to victory twice this year.

September 15 against the Indianapolis Colts. Sunday against the Jaguars.

    Jacobs delivered both times.

He had his first multi-touchdown game of his Packers career on Sunday while averaging more than five yards-per-carry.

Jacobs has been anything the Packers could have hoped for when he signed a 4-year contract with them back in March.

    Edgerrin Cooper

Edgerrin Cooper has some things he needs to clean up. He misses tackles and assignments.

He's also got the ability to change games with his playmaking ability.

His strip sack of Trevor Lawrence helped the Packers score a touchdown to take a 27-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

He also showed off his speed when he ran step-for-step with Jacksonville's slot receiver, Christian Kirk.

The play resulted in a pass breakup and a punt from the Jaguars instead of a big play to put them back into business.

Cooper has slowly worked his way into the lineup. He needs to be on the field more whenever Quay Walker clears the concussion protocol.

    Showdown with Mo-Town

Next week? The Packers play the Detroit Lions. It's the biggest regular season game they've played so far this year.

This game is for first place in the NFC North.

Who starts at quarterback is going to be unclear. Malik Willis has been impressive, but the Lions are a different beast than the AFC South teams that Willis has been able to navigate.

A 3:25 Fox Game of the Week for first place in the division.

I think the Packers are doing a terrible job managing Jordan Love's injuries. I have to believe that the groin injury probably was a result of favoring a knee that isn't quite healed, and won't be healed unless he stay off it a longer. It seems to me that the Packers are in the same position as when Starr had Bronkowski to back him up. They had a great backup that could give Starr time to heal. Malik is that guy now.Why the Packers are putting Love at risk and not putting him on the bench with the focus on getting him well for the playoffs is beyond me. I think they're throwing their season away hoping that he can muddle through. I'm afraid it's going to bite them come play off time if they don't manage this differently. Set the guy down until he's 100%.
