Body found in North Fork River
Shortly after 1600 hours on 7/20/2024, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, and Elliston Fire Dept. responded to reports of a body found in the North Fork river in the area of Cannery Rd. in Elliston, Va. The deceased had been in the water for an undetermined amount of time based on the investigation. It was determined that the deceased was an hispanic male, approximately 50 years old based on identification found at the scene. The Medical examiner responded to the scene and custody of the deceased was transferred to the ME’s office. At this time there is no indication of foul play, however this is an on-going investigation. There are no further updates from the Sheriff’s Office to be provided.
Championship spotter and Bristol native Bob Jeffrey passes away after cancer battle
Bob Jeffrey, a championship spotter in both the NASCAR Cup Series and the Indy Car Series, passed away after battling cancer. He was 65 years old. Bob was a native of Bristol and attended Tennessee High before his family moved to West Virginia before his senior year of high school. He returned to the area to pursue a career in racing, working for Henderson Motorsports and Ed Whitaker Racing as a tire changer.

State offering $2 million in grants for historic restoration/rehab projects
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Historical Commission announced a new grant to help cover the cost of restoring National Register-listed historic properties in the state. Overall, $2 million is available from the Historic Property/Land Acquisition Fund (HPLAF) Grant Program this year. Applications are open now through Aug. 31. The grants are competitive and can be used for historic restoration or rehabilitation projects for National Register-listed properties that have a public benefit. ...
