Sheriff Larry Rowe was one of 100 sheriffs to sign a letter in support of a letter to Governor Abbott from the Sheriff ’s Association of Texas to secure the border. The emphasis of the letter was a plea to prevent the flow of potential human traffickers, drug dealers, and gang members.

In the letter, the association wrote, “As Sheriffs, we must faithfully preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and Texas. We respectfully request that our Texas border be immediately secured by any lawful means.

“We recognize the indisputable and unprecedented atrocities occurring at our southern border. Unvetted migrants crossing into Texas from more than 120 countries include cartel members, gang members, known or suspected terrorists, and human traffickers all of whom pose a clear and present danger to America and her citizens. The influx of illegal drugs has irreversibly damaged our communities.

“The mass deaths by illicit drugs originating from Mexico alone (more than 100,000 deaths per year) could be considered a weapon of mass destruction. Equally alarming is how our unsecured border is directly responsible for numerous criminal victimizations of citizens and non-citizens as well as numerous human rights violations, which include but are not limited to murder, child and adult sexual assault and abuse, human trafficking, kidnapping, indentured servitude, forced child labor, identity theft, and exploitation of workers.

“The unsecured border is a deliberate, destructive, and inhumane violation of Texas and federal law. It overwhelms the resources of Texas and the United States and encourages continued invasion by unknown criminals and unvetted persons.

“We request that our dangerous, chaotic ‘’Texas Border Emergency’’ be officially declared a United States Constitutional Crisis and Crimes Against Humanity. We further request that the United States Government without delay assist in securing the border.

“Border security and immigration can and should be mutually exclusive. An antiquated immigration process in need of improvement does not infer or require our government to have an ineffective, unsecured, and dangerous southern border. The southern border is a national security issue, which jeopardizes United States sovereignty and the safety of American citizens.”

On X, formerly Twitter, Governor Abbott met with many of the Sheriffs and thanked them for their support. “Thank you to the over 100 sheriffs who signed onto this letter of support for Operation Lone Star.

“Your partnership is critical as we continue fighting Pres. Biden’s deadly border crisis to protect Texas— and America.”

In a release from the Governor he said, “Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 505,800 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 41,000 criminal arrests, with more than 36,500 felony charges.

“In the fight against the fentanyl crisis, Texas law enforcement has seized over 470 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.”

Abbott also noted: Texas has also transported: Over 12,500 migrants to Washington, D.C. since April 2022 Over 40,300 migrants to New York City since August 2022 Over 33,000 migrants to Chicago since August 2022 Over 3,400 migrants to Philadelphia since November 2022 Over 17,100 migrants to Denver since May 18 Over 1,500 migrants to Los Angeles since June 14 Some have accused Abbott of using the Migrant crisis for political gain. The Texas Tribune notes in a past issue, “Donald F. Kettl, professor emeritus and former dean at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, said the latest transports represent a ‘dramatic escalation in the use of immigrants as a political tool and a political symbol.

‘One of the things that’s happened for sure is that immigrants as human beings — the notion that they have needs or problems they’re trying to escape and their aspirations to create a new home in the U.S. — has been pushed aside by the idea to create a mega symbol and use them as pawns that are being moved,’ Kettl said. ‘It’s a truly awful way to treat human beings and it’s an effort for sure to push the needs of human beings aside to try to score political points.’” Abbott disagrees, “Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies.”

“On Wednesday (March 20), Governor Abbott met with over 100 Texas sheriffs who signed a letter of support for Operation Lone Star and Texas’ historic efforts to secure the border. The Governor thanked them for their ongoing partnership as Texas continues to respond to President Biden’s open border crisis.”

Sheriff Rowe said he indeed signed the letter and agreed that strengthening the border is important, but couldn’t make it to the photo opp.
