Dog parade in downtown Atlanta
, , On Saturday, May 11 the Lucky U rescue in conjunction with three other downtown events downtown held a dog dog parade. According to the organizer they had about 22 dogs enter the parade/dog show. Lindsay Robbins said things are moving along, “we are breaking down the project by sections and plan to start with the right wing. Asbestos remediation for just the right wing and storage building in the back is $30,000. We will also need a new roof to protect the inside of the building. Robinson notes that all their ‘fundraising efforts go towards remediating the asbestos in...
Ravanna, Arkansas
Ravanna, Arkansas, has the distinction of being located in the exact southwest corner of the state. In fact, the Texas state line is only 300 yards west of the center of town and the Louisiana state line is only two and a half miles south. Like so many other towns, there are several stories of how Ravanna got its name. Alice Brown, a lifetime resident of the area says that it was most likely named after a railway employee when the railroad came through in 1892. This was a common practice of the time. The whole area, including Era, was settled by...
903 Baseball and Softball Academy
, , , Atlanta’s new sport venture — 903 Baseball and Softball Academy — held a grand opening of food and fun Saturday afternoon to thank the public for its acceptance of the new personal development opportunity. “After a month and a half of opening, we wanted to do something to thank and give back to the public,” said owner Jay Owens. “So we planned this afternoon of fun and appreciation.” The public was invited to experience this practice gym and pro-shop and enjoy the personal and professional relationships offered. In one example of the community relationship offered, the academy recently opened on a day when electricity and school were both out. “We wanted to find a way to get those kids out of the house and at the same time get those practice swings in,” owners Jay and Jennifer Owens said. “So, come to 903,” they said. The 903 Baseball and Softball facility is located at 214 North East Street in downtown Atlanta.
Interview with VanDeaver
Publishers Note: Last week we featured a reprinted interview performed by Garrit Blizzard of The Texas Horn. Since Blizzard is no longer working for the Horn, he has not interviewed Gary VanDeaver. To give both candidates equal opportunity the Journal-Sun sent questions to VanDeaver. Below are his responses. We did not fact-check either interview for accuracy; Chris Spencer or Gary VanDeaver. There will be an additional opportunity coming up this Thursday to learn more about each candidate in a debate at the Truman Arnold Building at the Texarkana College Campus, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Journal-Sun: Why did...
County readies for District 1 run-off election
n VanDeaver, Spencer debate in Texarkana this week After the election was concluded on March 5th, 2024, there was no winner for House District 1; now the district is headed for a runoff on May 28, with early voting starting on the 20th. Originally three candidates were vying for the seat that Gary VanDeaver has held since 2015. However, since no one received 50% plus one, there is now a runoff. A debate in Texarkana between the incumbent, Gary VanDeaver, and challenging candidate Chris Spencer will be held in Texarkana. It will be held in the Truman Arnold Building, Texarkana College Campus,...

Spencer is a businessman and the former chairman of the Sulphur River Basin Authority. He is the father of two and grandfather of...

CASS COUNTY UPDATE
Transportation considerations for our collective future Publisher’s Note: The front page story on water resources should have had a byline for Travis Ransom last week. When I drove Route 66 from Chicago to LA several years ago I got a first-hand look at the impacts of interstate highways; both good and bad. Interstate highways are a necessary conduit that connect the supply chain of our nation. However, in many cases, they have smoothed out all the unique features of our vastly unique landscape. They are dotted with the same chain restaurants and box stores across the nation. If you have been to Chili’s...
TESTING NEW WATER
, , , Texas’ newest recreational fishing lake — Bois d’Arc Lake — quietly opened for business on the morning of April 17. Not surprisingly, some anglers who learned about the party in advance enjoyed some pretty good fishing. The thousands who didn’t know about the opening missed out on the rare opportunity to be among the first to visit a brand new lake on opening day. New lakes are special, and they don’t come along very often. The water is extremely fertile and the fish are vastly uneducated. That’s the way it usually goes, anyway. Most Texas anglers had no idea the...
Lithium Brine continues to be hot topic for East Texas
In May the Journal-Sun did an article titled “Could Cass County See the Next Big Boon”. The story follows the recent news that Standard Lithium has found quality Lithium in a well in Cass County and area communities, the spot of some of the highest certified lithium-grade brine. Which was taken from a sample of a repurposed oil well outside McLeod. The area sits atop the Smackover Formation, a geological formation that runs underneath an area that begins in far Northeast Texas and runs to the Florida panhandle. Since then, the narrative slowly continues to pick up steam. This is in...
Playoff bound
, That’s a wrap. Another hardball season here in Cass County has ended as far as the regular schedule goes. Our local teams have battled plenty of tough opponents, along with the weather, en route to playoff appearances. Softball On the softball side of things, Queen City won its third consecutive district championship and will face Quitman in the first round of the state playoffs. The first game is scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 24, in Quitman. Game two will be the following day in Queen City. Game three, if needed, will be decided by coin flip. All three games will begin at 7 p.m. Atlanta also...
Baseball/Softball
Atlanta Rabbits Atlanta’s baseball team thrashed Paul Pewitt 28-10 in a five-inning game on Apr. 16. The Rabbits were up 5-0 going into the third frame where they exploded for 16 runs. Peyton Harrison had himself a day at the plate as he hit a solo homerun and an inside the park grand slam, Easton Owens was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Will Woodruff was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, Cason Whatley was 2-for-3 with a double and...
Walking the weight away
, , Terry Jones walks Atlanta daily. Every day, except when it rains. For two hours and not less than 10 miles. If it does rain, he works out at home, perhaps five to six hours that day. He’s by himself and doesn’t need or want a partner. He sees plenty of Atlanta folk in the downtown area. Store owners especially. They call him “The Walking Man.” He wears the same black clothing. That’s black shorts and maybe a black tee-shirt with yellow lettering that reads “ARMY,” which he is or was. He’s a veteran. He 50 years old now but doesn’t...

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week
, , , , This week is officially National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Cass County. Surviving a crime can have myriad lasting effects on victims, including physical, psychological, social, and financial issues. We know that countless survivors never tell anyone about what happened to them. Each of us has a moral responsibility to actively participate in the healing of others. It is necessary to create safe environments for survivors of crime, providing not only support but also access to critical services and, above all, hope. Victim service providers, community members, businesses, places of worship, colleagues, neighbors, and family members are capable of providing victim-...
BIG BASS CENTRAL
, , , Some call Texas the Lone Star State. I like to call it “Big Bass Central.” An army of giant bass have been caught in Texas over the years. At last count, more than 90 Lone Star reservoirs had produced lake records weighing 13 pounds or more. The biggest bass are always females. Fisheries experts have told me a mature female bass with egg-swollen ovaries will weigh about 10 percent heavier than it will weigh without. A fish could weigh considerably more if caught soon after dining on a 1 1/2-pound crappie or fat gizzard shad. It happens. Former Toyota Share-Lunker...
