Questions and Answers
What started as curiosity, in time, turned into a heart-felt desire for Atlanta native Quentin Sasser. Playing with his friends in a field between Booker T. Washington High School and Pruitt Elementary gave way to piqued inquisitiveness after witnessing educator Howard Warren launching golf balls at a large oak tree some 180 yards away. As the days went by Sasser, a multi-sport athlete, began to delve deeper into the golfing world which would ultimately set him on a path to the PGA of America. Sasser’s story was passed on to me and upon reading a very detailed article by PGA of America Public...

Forty-four years of music and laughter
, Still smiling, still trying hard, still playing their best after all these years, the Hickory Hill Winterfest was a big hit Saturday, even if it rained all day beforehand. The crowd at the Music City Theater in Linden stood to applaud the six performers who make up Hickory Hill bluegrass. The applause was for two hours of continuous music. Here are the musicians’ names: Richard Bowden, Milo Deering, John Early, Don Eaves, Ronny Singley and Bob Stegall. To keep the record straight, Hickory Hill is playing in its 44th year of being together and its 21st year of being at the...

Quentin Sasser, PGA, and the Journey to Finding Purpose
, Editor’s Note (Tim Emmons, Sports Editor of the Journal-Sun in Atlanta, Texas): The original article is followed by my editorial derived from questions I sent to Mr. Sasser who hails from Atlanta, Texas. The original article was written by PGA of America Public Relations Lead, Jesse Dodson who gracefully allowed me use of the editorial and photos. Jesse was also instrumental in getting my questions over to Mr. Sasser which helped bring this wonderful article to readers in the same area Mr. Sasser grew up in. Many people seek out the game of golf, but for PGA of America Golf...
Jeryl Sasser inducted into Hall of Fame
Occasionally, you hear of a story that was never published in the newspaper. A few years ago, I had the honor of meeting Jeryl Sasser who has not only times to Atlanta, Texas but to pro sports. Sasser’s family athletics history stretches back a ways and can still be seen in different sports at this point in time. Sasser, an Atlanta High School alum, was inducted into the Trinty Valley Community College Hall of Fame back in 2021. Sasser played two seasons (69-71) for the Cardinals in which he made the team via a tryout. During those two seasons at Trinity Valley the Cards...
NO CWD AT KERR AFTER ALL
Just when you thought the story behind the discovery of chronic wasting disease in a penned deer at Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Kerr Wildlife Management Area’s 23-acre research facility couldn’t get any more unfortunate, it did. The good news is the 14-month old buck that tested “suspect positive” for CWD last fall was not infected with the disease after all. The bad news is TPWD staff opted to euthanize the facility’s entire research herd before the test results were confirmed by the National Veterinary Service Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa. Here’s what happened, according to TPWD reports: Suspect Positive = Not Confirmed Last October,...
Hug in a Mug
, , , Ava Hollen is an irrepressible teenager from Linden. She speaks, writes and creates with an exuberant personality. Her high school teachers have already told her she writes and expresses herself as if she were a college student. Recently Ava’s teachers suggested the students come up with some suggestion of how to bring people together, something of community service. “How to overcome bad feelings, maybe not be so divided but instead be together,” said Ava, who is 16 years old and homeschooled. She had an idea. Why not find a way to give anonymous compliments? “Anonymous affirmations” were her words. She calls it...

This set of stories in 2024 will focus on entrepreneurs and educators. Coleman’s legacy made news again in January of 2023 with the announcement that her likeness would be featured as a Barbie...
A perspective of a former restaurant owner
Recently I have been seeing posts come across social media both positive and negative about local businesses. I think these posts hit me especially hard because my wife and I owned a restaurant in Kansas and experienced personal struggles in, and throughout the time we owned it. I thought maybe I could give a fresh perspective from a former restaurant owner to those who have never owned a restaurant. I have been a business owner most of my life and can tell you that owning a restaurant is one of the hardest businesses to own. Someone was surprised the other day...
My Heart Won’t Fail
, In Luke 21, Jesus gives events that will happen before his return, v. 24-25 he says, And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars, and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and waves roaring., men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Men’s hearts, humanity, fainting from fear, passing away because their heart can’t take what they are seeing, hearing, or the events taking place. Fear of the known as...
What is It
, , , , , , , Time for a little more observational fun. Here are eight photographs of items to be seen mostly in Atlanta but also Cass County. Your challenge is just to see if you have seen them and can tell where they are from. The reward is that when you do see them the next time, you’ll have a flash of recognition and remember that, yes, I’ve seen them and know what they are and where they are. It’s fun for the photographer, too. He gets to observe more.

Every two years the University Interscholastic League (UIL) realignment process can be an exciting time for fans, players and coaches or it can be a total nightmare travel-wise. On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the UIL released the new district realignments for football, basketball and volleyball for years 20242026. Atlanta Atlanta’s football district from the past two years changed slightly with this new alignment as Liberty-Eylau dropped down a division from 4A-DII.
