Multipurpose Senior Center Planned For Park in Southwest Atlanta

The city is working on some changes to John A. White Park, a park in southwest Atlanta that includes a golf course.

A land development permit was recently filed for a 25,000-square-foot senior center at 1125 Cascade Cir SW. A permit application was also filed to propose the demolition of an existing 1,825-square-foot golf club house at the site.

The project would include a golf center with an equipment shop, a casual-dining restaurant, and offices, as well as a senior center with a fitness club and multi-purpose rooms for “various senior learning and leisure activities,” according to city documents .

The City Council approved legislation this spring for $30 million in bonds to finance the costs of design and related improvements to the park. The bonds were secured by an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority .

In March, the city collected community feedback to hear residents’ thoughts on the planned senior center.

“The passage of this legislation marks a significant step forward in our commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for all residents of Atlanta,” Justin Cutler , commissioner for the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, said in an announcement. “Through partnerships with Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority, we are investing in the future of John A. White Park, ensuring that it continues to be a vibrant hub for golf, senior activities and community engagement. This initiative exemplifies our dedication to move Atlanta forward by creating accessible, high-quality recreational facilities that enrich the lives of our citizens and contribute to a healthier, happier city.”

District 11 Atlanta Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet said the funds would “support the design and related improvements to ensure that our park continues to serve as a vibrant hub for recreation, leisure and community engagement.”

John A. White Golf Course originally opened in 1929 and was fully renovated in 1999, followed by more recent renovations in 2022.
