Black Music Takes Center Stage at The Black Music Moguls Brunch

June marks Black Music Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Black musicianship. Black music has profoundly shaped American history and influenced genres such as soul, funk, hip-hop and rap.

Against this backdrop, the 5th Annual Black Music Moguls brunch in Atlanta was a spectacular celebration of Black excellence, drawing music enthusiasts and industry professionals to honor six iconic figures: TI, TLC , Amina Diop, Leon Rogers and John Rose. Held at The Gathering Spot, the event highlighted the achievements of these music legends and commemorated their contributions to the rich tapestry of Black music.

During the brunch, heartfelt speeches were delivered to honor legends in the music industry including Atlanta living legends TI and TLC. TI—also known as Clifford Joseph Harris Jr.—accompanied by his son, rising rapper Damoni, received the Icon Award. The "King of the South" has released many chart-topping albums and singles throughout his career, earning several prestigious awards, including three Grammys.

"We have an awareness that the marketplace desires we [Black executives] know it first before everyone else knows it," TI told EBONY. "We [Black executives] are actually in the spaces other executives don’t take the time to go to. We are there first and we see it first."

TLC’s CrazySexyCool dropped 30 years ago. The diamond-certified album presented a new sound, a new look and a new vibe to the music scene, revolutionizing the way we all saw girl groups.The album was nominated for six Grammys and won two. It has sold a staggering 14 million copies worldwide.

Not only did TLC receive the Eternal Harmony Award, but they were also given the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Powerhouse Award went to Leon Rogers and John Rose. Amina Diop, although she could not be in attendance, received The Trailblazer Award. Friends, colleagues and admirers took the stage to express their admiration, gratitude and respect for the honorees' contributions to the music industry. These speeches highlighted not only their creative achievements but also their philanthropic efforts and their roles as cultural influencers.

Attendees had the opportunity to witness incredible touching tribute performances from Alex Vaughn, Malibu Mitch, Jalen Josey, Anamii and Shantel May and relive nostalgic moments through memorable hits while gaining insights into the journey of the iconic girl group that left audiences on their feet.

The brunch provided a nurturing environment for music lovers to network and learn from the experiences of established power players. The event aimed to encourage and support the next generation of Black music artists and executives, ensuring that the legacy of TI, TLC, Amina Diop, John Rose and Leon Rogers continues to inspire and shape the industry for years to come.

“We need Black music executives in the industry to be able to advocate for Black artists,” Niya Skyy, creator of Black Music Moguls, tells EBONY. "You have an industry where Hip Hop is Black, but the music execs are not. So it is extremely important to have people of color in those spaces to continue to be a voice and represent all types of Black and Brown people."

The 5th Annual Black Music Moguls Brunch was a resounding success. It brought together music lovers, industry insiders and fans to celebrate the remarkable contributions of TI, TLC, Amina Diop, John Rose and Leon Rogers. It was a day filled with joy, inspiration and appreciation for the immense talent and impact of these artists and industry leaders.
