Atlanta is not known as a burger town, but it should be. We went all around town trying everything from smashburgers with crispy edges to $30 burgers with fresh beef and housemade bread, and we found some very serious contenders for not only the best burger in Atlanta but in the entire country.

    THE SPOTS

    NFA Burger

    Double, The Classic

After roaming pop-up NFA Burger opened its permanent digs inside a Dunwoody Chevron, it quickly gained a fanbase, its flowers, and the nickname "gas station burger." And we’re happy to report this burger joint is worth the hype. You can smell the burgers cooking the moment you pull up to the parking lot. The perfectly seasoned thin patties have a crunchy halo that peeks out from beneath a pillowy bun. Plus, a single patty burger runs you about $5 (a double is only $8), which only ups our love.

    The Chastain

    The TC Cheeseburger

The TC Cheeseburger at The Chastain in Buckhead comes with two thin patties, housemade pickles, shredded lettuce, and a soft, buttery toasted bun. The caramelized onions add a kick of subtle sweet, so the ingredients interact together perfectly. It’s also huge (you'll need both hands to hold it) and comes with a side of thick, excellently seasoned fries. So when we're sipping a cabernet with our meal on the lush garden patio, we have no regrets about our $32 burger splurge.

    Fred's Meat & Bread

    Burger Stack

Nobody does sandwiches in Atlanta as well as Fred’s Meat & Bread, and that sentiment extends to their burger. It comes with two juicy patties, a few slices of cheese, mayo, and pickles stacked on a sesame seed bun (the bread is made fresh daily by TGM Bread, the team at The General Muir). The burger is juicy and so good we’re always tempted to save half for later, but that’s always a fail.

    Holeman & Finch Public House

    $$$$Perfect For:LunchDay DrinkingDate Night

    H&F Burger

For close to a decade, Holeman & Finch has been the burger of the A. With locations in the Braves stadium, Ponce City Market, Mercedes Benz Stadium, and this Colony Square flagship, the H&F burger is an always reliable, always accessible go-to. The beef patties (which are ground daily) barely need chewing, and they're just charred enough to give it some texture without carrying the overwhelming flavor of the grill. With a soft, housemade bun, gooey cheese, and tangy pickles, it's the quintessential burger—just done really, really well.

    Che Butter Jonez

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsLunchLiterally EveryoneQuick Eats

    Who Wants Beef Son

You might miss Che Butter Jonez driving down Cleveland Avenue in SWAT, but that means you’d also be missing out on their incredible smash burger, the Who Wants Beef Son. It comes on a soft bun with two crispy but juicy patties. A char gives the ground beef a satisfying mix of chew and crunch. Despite the patties being thin, they’re well-seasoned, making the burger full of flavor.

    The Tower of Power

If you're ever fondly reminiscing over that famously "big" fast food burger, come to your senses and hit this Upper Westside restaurant instead. For only a few dollars more, The Companion's Tower of Power burger is a way better, dressed-up version of that nostalgic favorite. The beef is super fresh, and it’s stacked with two crispy-edged beef patties that are slathered with Million Island dressing (a smooth, housemade version of old school Thousand Island).

    LOL Burger Bar

    $$$$Perfect For:TakeawaySerious Take-Out OperationLunchKids

    The LOL Burger

At LOL Burgers, located on the Westside, every burger is named after an emoji. The housemade patties taste like they've been lifted right off a grill at a summer cookout and come with a soft, sweet bun. We like their signature LOL Burger with melty gouda, spicy mayo, and grilled peppers.

    Little's Food Store

$$$$Perfect For:Cheap EatsClassic EstablishmentDining SoloKidsLunchQuick Eats

    Single Slider

Little’s Food Store in Cabbagetown has been around since the 1920s. The grocery store (which has a grill with counter seating in the back) has had a reliably great burger for ages. It’s not fancy. And it's considered small in today's super-sized burger world. It’s just plain ol’ good and juicy, with a fluffy bun. And it’s the perfect on-the-go burger from one of Atlanta’s favorite counter-service spots.

    #9

    Grindhouse Killer Burgers

    $$$$Perfect For:Big GroupsCheap EatsDogsLunchOutdoor/Patio Situation

    Grindhouse Style

These days, there are more Grindhouses around town than chicken wing bones on the ground. Just kidding—nothing could top that number. But it’s obvious why they’ve expanded to five locations, including the airport: they make darn good burgers. We love the Grant Park location, the perfect stop for a weeknight burger that’s flavorful and grilled to a crunch with a sweet bun. We enjoy the classic, american cheese-topped Grindhouse Style burger, but this is the place you can really go in with different proteins and toppings like pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, vidalia onion rings, and other things that make our Southern hearts sing.
