If Alex Sarr is the best player, the Hawks just need to take him

The Atlanta Hawks have a big decision coming up on Wednesday night as they have the rights to the top pick in the NBA Draft. Alex Sarr, who is widely considered to be the top prospect in the 2025 class, refused to come to Atlanta for a work out and is rumored to prefer a selection by the Washington Wizards at number two.

Should the Hawks take him anyway if Sarr is who many scouts think he could be, despite his wish to play elsewhere? The Steakhouse discussed this thought and gave a resounding yes.

"You don't have that leverage [to decide where you want to go] in basketball," Rusty Mansell said on Wednesday. "This isn't a generational draft where you have an Anthony Edwards or a LeBron James... This guy has no leverage. I don't care if your agent is pissed off or not, we're going to draft your a** and you're going to show up on Peachtree."

Hawks fans may feel some way about a potential pick blocking out their city, but both parties will get over that as soon as basketball starts back up in October and he suits up in an Atlanta jersey.

"[Sarr] is not going to show up in Atlanta with veterans like DeAndre Hunter and Trae Young -- let's say they move Dejounte -- Clint Capela, or whatever combination of guys and throw attitude like 'I'm too good to be here'," Shapiro continued. "It will all work itself out. He will sit in the press conference in two days right there at the Hawks headquarters... and he will smile, he will wear the hat, and say 'I can't wait to get started'."

At 7-foot-1 with a developing three-point shot which projects only to improve in the coming years and post defense that will show up on day one, Sarr simply offers the most flexibility for Quinn Snyder and this coaching staff. If he is the top player on their board, there's no question that they should just take him and deal with whatever fallout may arise, if any, down the road.
