July 3 — Metro Atlanta is gearing up for 4th of July celebrations, and we’ve got a roundup of events happening around the city including the Peachtree Road Race and the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade.
🌞 Mostly sunny and 92° today.
💵 The Atlanta City Council approved a settlement of $2 million for two college students tasered and pulled from a car while stuck in Downtown traffic caused by protests over George Floyd’s killing in 2020.
⚖️ Environmental organization Chattahoochee Riverkeeper has threatened to file a lawsuit against the City of Atlanta over sewage discharge into the river.
🏚️ Atlanta City Councilmember Byron Amos introduced legislation to create a new “blight tax” to crack down on neglected properties that contribute to blighted conditions and disinvestment in neighborhoods.
💰 Nonprofit AID Atlanta will receive a $2.5 million federal grant to fund housing assistance and supportive services for those living with HIV/AIDS.

1. A guide to the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade
🇺🇸 Rough Draft has partnered with the Dunwoody Homeowners Association to present the 2024 4th of July Parade. The parade, which has the theme “Red, White & YOU,” is the largest in the state.
The 2.7-mile parade route steps off from the intersection of Mount Vernon and Jett Ferry roads at 9 a.m. David Abes of DASH Hospitality is the Grand Marshal.
After the parade, you can stick around for a festival at Dunwoody Village, where there will be plenty of activities to enjoy.
But, before the festivities start, you’ll need to find the perfect viewing spot. We’ve got some tips for you ahead of the parade.

📷 Tyler Mitchell has traveled the world with his photography career. This summer, he’s bringing it back home to Atlanta.
The High Museum’s newest exhibition presents the work by Atlanta native Tyler Mitchell, who rose to fame when he photographed Beyoncé for Vogue as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for the magazine. Tyler Mitchell: Idyllic Space blends fine art and fashion photography while delving into themes of Black self-determination and empowerment through scenes of love, leisure, and camaraderie.

2. On your mark
🍑 The 55th Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race takes place on Thursday morning. The race, the world’s largest 10K, starts at Lenox Square and ends at Piedmont Park.
🏃♂️ If you haven’t gotten your number yet, or if you just want to soak in the atmosphere, head down to the race expo today at the Georgia World Congress Center Hall C4 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (9-10 a.m. Atlanta Track Club members only).

🎸 The course will feature entertainment along the route, and organizers have added more than usual in an attempt to live up to its billing as the “Party of the Summer.”

🧨 Whether you’re in Atlanta, Tucker, Chamblee, or Sandy Springs, there are plenty of fun things to do on America’s birthday. You might be looking for some exercise, or maybe a block party with an ice-cold beer — whatever it is, we’ve got you covered.
4. Zesto celebrates 75 years of serving burgers, hot dogs, and milkshakes
🥤 Zesto – the Atlanta institution known for its “Chubby Decker” burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, and dipped cones – will celebrate its 75th anniversary during July.
In 1949, Big John Livaditis opened the first Zesto franchise in Atlanta on Peachtree Road across from the Brookwood train station, and it was instantly popular. Big John, born in Illinois to Greek parents, sponsored other Greek immigrants to come to the U.S. to work with him while opening more Zesto locations.
Big John, who also created Big John’s Christmas Trees , died in 1995. His son and daughter-in-law, Jimbo and Leigh Ann, now run the family business.
