The Andy Warhol Foundation will award $150,000 to two local nonprofits in their Spring 2024 grant cycle.

Founded in 1987 following a directive in Andy Warhol’s will, the mission of the Foundation is the advancement of visual arts. Through significant grants totaling more than $300 million to date awarded to more than 1,000 arts organizations around the world, the Foundation has found a real, actionable way to support and uplift contemporary artists and art organizations.

And this year, two worthy local nonprofits are celebrating their inclusion on the list of winners.

The Hammonds House Museum , a historic home-turned-museum in Atlanta’s West End, has a legacy of supporting and uplifting artists of African descent. In the 2024 grant cycle they were awarded an incredible $100,000 to support their mission.

“We’re incredibly grateful to receive this major grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation,” said Donna Watts-Nunn, Managing Director of Hammonds House Museum. “This funding will empower us to elevate our curatorial projects, strengthen community partnerships, and bring world-class exhibitions and engaging events to our community. It’s a wonderful opportunity to expand our reach and impact.”

This grant will be used to support the exhibitions and programming at the Hammonds House Museum through the summer of 2026. In their plans, they intend to showcase works from their permanent collection as well as exhibitions of national and international artists of African American descent. The Hammonds House occupies the Victorian style former residence of the late Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, an esteemed physician and patron of the arts.

“Hammonds House Museum is an important resource and cultural center for Atlanta and the greater South,” said Rachel Bers, Program Director of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. “We are proud to support the community engagement and critical awareness it brings to powerful, resonant work by Black artists in the region and beyond.”

Hammonds House provides art exhibitions, community engagement, and education opportunities centered around the African diaspora, bringing visitors a deeper understanding of the artworks and the artists who create them.

Meanwhile, Art Papers has received $50,000 for a Curatorial Research Fellowship. This funding will support the strategic plan that they are calling “Fire Ecology.” Under this new strategic plan, Art Papers seeks to promote a balanced and healthy ecosystem, so-to-speak, through the use of controlled burns that make way for new growth.

“Our goal is to transform the operations of this 20th-century organization into a curatorial project of interlocking research and programs to enrich the ground from which 21st-century models and practices will emerge,” reads a statement on the Art Papers Facebook page.

This Curatorial Research Fellowship grant is one of six awarded this year, and will celebrate Art Papers’ 50-year legacy.

“We strive to support institutions that share our artist-centered values,” explained Joel Wachs in a statement on the Warhol Foundation website. Grantees receiving support include small to mid-sized organizations that do the work to enable contemporary artists to succeed. This can be through exhibitions, residencies, public art, publications, and more.

“The small grassroots arts organizations as well as the museums that comprise our grantees provide invaluable opportunities for artists to express their unique perspectives on the pressing urgencies of the day. We hope that our grants help to amplify artists’ voices within their communities, in national discussions and debates, and across platforms in the international contemporary art world.”

In total, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will grant 49 visual arts and cultural organizations across the United States and one museum in South Africa a staggering $4 million in financial support.
